Lucas,
As you are discovering now, high-quality elevation data is hard to find, especially for free, and especially for projects outside of the US. As you search the Internet for the data, I would recommend using the phrase "digital elevation model" (DEM), as this is the specific product you need.
As far as sources go, the USGS website will provide 90-meter SRTM data for the entire world, free of charge. The problem with this is that 90 meters may be a poorer quality resolution than what you're seeing in FSX's default setup. I could be wrong (I'm not at my FSX rig) but in either case, 90 meters is not very good and will barely make a scenery's elevation resemble the real thing, apart from large, obvious formations. I checked mapmart.com quickly and it looks like the best they have there is 90 meter as well. You may be able to get your hands on some 30 meter mesh at
www.microimages.com/geodata-htm/elevation/ but it appears that this is only INPE-resampled SRTM, and comes in a proprietary format. I have worked with neither, I'm sorry to say.
My sense is that with some searching, willingness to pay, and luck, you'll be able to find some higher-resolution DEM. If you need any help finding and using the right tools, just check back here and people will be able to assist. If you choose not to purchase Global Mapper, I highly suggest VTBuilder, which provides much of Gdal's functionality, but with a more forgiving learning-curve.
Best of luck on your scenery.
