• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Error importing dae file.

Out of about 9 objects I've done in Sketchup so far, this is the only one that has been a problem when importing into ModelConverterX. I have supplied screens to show what I'm working on and the error message.

Thanks...any help would be appreciated!

Hi Ed:

Nice looking model !

Although it is possible there is something unique about your Sketchup exported *.DAE file in question that Arno may be able to resolve, to see if the 3D geometry is OK, you could also try the alternate exporter code routine which Sketchup uses to create a *.DAE file within a *.KMZ format.

FYI: A *. KMZ file is a ZIP file containing a "Untitled.DAE", and a "Models" sub-folder which contains a "Doc.KML; if necessary, re-name a copy of the *.KMZ to *.ZIP to use an available ZIP utility which only reads files with an explicit "*.ZIP" extension.

One can simply un-ZIP the exported *.KMZ file format to access its contents (and ex: re-name one's *.DAE file as desired). ;)

Some Sketchup users have reported better results using the *.DAE file packaged within a exported *.KMZ file format rather than the individually designated default *.SKP or *.DAE file format export code routines ...to access the 3D model geometry created in Sketchup for use in other 3rd party 3D modeling apps.

Hope this helps ! :)

Thanks Gary, I'll look into that as an alternative. I would like to know specifically what the error message means though. If it's something I've done in the process I'd like to know so I can make sure I don't repeat it. Surely I'm not the first user to have this error message pop up.

Just as a update, I tried that routine and assuming that it was done correctly, which I am pretty sure it was. . . .the results are the same.

Downloaded that updated set Gary and ran it again. . .basically getting the same error just that the verbiage is slightly different. I sent in a report this time though. See what happens.

Hi Ed:

Hang in there; I haven't seen Arno in the forum here for a few days, so he's probably away on business, and will likely follow up on this soon. :)

Hi,

No business this time, it was just a nasty cold keeping me offline :)

I saw the error report and will try to reproduce it here. Most likely my code is not robust enough and this dae file has something different from most. I hope to be back on normal speed in a few days.

Hi,

I fixed the bug now, so if you grab the development release tomorrow it should be working.

The problem was the DAE file contained some mesh nodes that were empty. Which version of SketchUp did you use? I haven't seen this before.

Many thanks Arno. . .I'm using Ver. 13.0.3689. . . .

Apparently the offending area was the railing. I deleted that from the model, saved as a new model and ran it through MCX. No problems this time aside from the note that my textures are not the correct size, which I knew. I will pick up the new release later tomorrow and run the version with the railings and see what happens. Thanks again for looking into this. . .hope you're feeling better.

I had the exact same problem. Sketchup model that worked a couple years ago now generates this same error if I use production version of MCX.

Using the development edition of MCX works.

Sounds like Sketchup has fouled up their DAE export routine. The only thing that changed for me was software versions.

Hi,

Sounds like they changed their collada structure a bit indeed. But it might still be valid collada code, maybe the importer logic in modelconverterx is just too strict :). But I'll check the files that give issues and try to make things more robust.
