ExcBuilder problems...

Hi All:

I cannot get ExcBuilder to create the BGL; maybe someone here can tell me what I'm doing wrong...here's what I've done (In a folder on C: drive, if that matters):

Per instructions, I downloaded FSConnect and put the .dll in FS9/Modules. I downloaded and installed bglComp...and also per instructions, bglcomp.exe and bglcomp.xsd are in the same folder as ExcBuilder.exe.

With Flight Sim running, In ExcBuilder I select "All Objects"...With the plane pointed 360 degrees, I "FSC" the SE corner of what I want deleted, slew the plane left and forward, then FSC the NW corner. The xml code shows the coordinates. I do "Generate source code", then I do "Save source and generate bgl". No crashes, no errors. I save it in Addon Scenery/scenery, but the only thing there is the xml file, no BGL. I've tried revesring the process (NW corner first), staying out of "Slew" mode...nothing works, no BGL.

Anyone have a hint as to what's amiss, here? Another factor may be that I'm trying to get rid of trees, but I also tried it with a tower, and it still work.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Garry

Did you tell ExcBuilder the location of BGLComp? (It does not need to be in the same folder, but ExcBuilder must know where it is). Settings on the menu bar.

RE: ExcBuilder...

WOW...I must really be doing something wrong...I don't have a menu-bar. I just tried to attach a pix of the screen I have with ExcBuilder, but the whole thing froze-up when I clicked "Manage Attachments". I just the picture on on a website page, and the URL is: http://www.lewisaire.com/excbuild.html

Thanks for your help, Peter. It almost sounds like I'm not running the right program, but it's ExcBuild.exe that I'm firing off.

Latest...

Well, I guess I'd better give up on this thing. I found what is probably a later version of ExcBuild on Avsim...ExcBuilderV2, and that DID have a menu-bar. Downloaded that to a totally new folder. Grabbed beglComp again straight from Microsoft and installed that again in the same folder, and made sure to tell ExcBuilder/Settings where bglcomp.exe is. Confirmed again that FSConnect.dll is in FS9/Modules. Plane pointing to 0-degrees, grabbed the SE corner again in Flight Sim...FSC'd the coordinates, grabbed the NW corner in Flight Sim, FSC'd those coordinates...did "Generate code, which it did....then did "Save code and generate BGL", which it did not...only the XML file shows up. Double-checked the instructions, and I have followed them to exactness.

The README says to message the author if there are problems...I've done that twice over the past week, and no response.

Thanks for your help, Peter...I dunno what's wrong, but I've wasted enough time on this piece of...stuff; I'll have to try something else that actually works as it claims.

Regards,
Garry

Hi Garry,

Is this the first time you are using BGLComp? If not, did it work before? If it is, did you install it correctly (following the instructions in the SDK) and also install MSXML 4, which is needed for BGLComp to run? The download URL is in the SDK, the document "FS2004BGLCompSDK.doc".

Peter

Hi Peter...

I GOT IT! As you suggested, it was the MSXML4 that was needed, and I had completely missed the call for it in the 75-page SDK document.

I owe you many thanks for helping out, and I owe (Paavo?) an apology for my previous little outburst of frustration; ExcBuilder works great, now that I have installed things properly.
