• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.

i have been making good progress, gmax modelling, uvw map, texture painting
in layers paintshop pro....etc etc. all good so far then...

whats my problem then?.....exporting?....ive been constantly exporting my model, whilst building, to test in fsx/acc, it seems to work fine....do i have a question?...yes i do....do i need to use xtomdl?. i would like to...

this is what ive got, and what i do....

w7 32bit, fsx/acc..gmax 1.2..md3,lith,paintshop pro...fsx sdk has two files,3dsm7, 3dsm9...both contain xto mdl etc....fsx gamepack in gmax,has xtomdl etc..

i export from gmax, guid, friendly name,export...one choice fsmdl...save to folder in fsx....added folder, aircraft. so i can keep my mistakes, out of sim objects....
aliased with fa18....seems fine...?? but xtomdl??

ive got a shortcut to the command line on my desktop...ive read bill leamings
wiki article...ive read the fsx sdk section...where can i find a simple guide for
really stupid people....me?.
ps, i really appreciate bill leamings wonderfully honed sense of humour...jim

Point of order here...

The Wiki article was written long before ACES released the FSX_GmaxGamePack, and it is only relevant for those of us who model in Max...

If you have the FSX_GmaxGamePack set up properly, exporting from GMax is fully automatic and will use XtoMDL.exe to spit out a .mdl file.

Hey Jim,

I think you are better off going with the built in Gmax system that Aces supplied for Gmax users, since you are using Gmax already.

The command line thing and all is for Max users and let me tell you, the Gmax route is EXTREMELY more efficient, easier, organized, and you still get the same MDL file when its done compiling.

Now... if you wish to use the XtoMDL program via the Max way of doing things, thats totally up to you.

thank you

so the sdk is not really up to speed...i had a feeling it was the case....
just needed to check with the experts.....perhaps buried within the sdk is the
note,fsx/acc gamepack uses xtomdl as default...thats one less thing to worry
about....thanks gents.....jim

Jim, yes, it uses basically the same one, but how and why are you going the DOS window entry route? Just curious.

For me, using the Gmax built in Exporter route is fast and smooth, almost in the blink of the eye.

It is good to know though if you can get Max and get it working as then you can smoothly move into instant exporting, having the knowledge.

Mind you, finding Max is the hard part as they do not sell anything from the past.. bums...

EDIT: Big bums... hairy big smelly bums... bum bums... tipple sized bums.. bum looker type of bums...

hi bill

the answer is curiosity, luckily ime not a cat..i like to know as much as i can
about anything i attempt, even if its not relevant to the task,
extra knowledge about an area can sometimes be surprisingly usefull...
