• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

For many years ModelConverterX has the function already to render a custom shadow model that has been imported from a FSX/P3D MDL file. But the feature to also export these custom shadow models to MDL files was on the wish-list for quite a while already. When working on the FS2004 unlimited export feature recently, I realised that exporting the a custom shadow model to FS2004 was very easy. So with that in mind I started to implement this feature now.

So from the latest development release you can now export a custom shadow model to FS2004, FSX and P3D MDL files. The screenshots below show a test model I exported to FSX (left) and FS2004 (right). I loaded a COLLADA test object with the COLLADA logo as the shadow model for this church.

And since I needed to test if exporting the custom shadow model to FS2004 models worked, I also had to implement reading custom shadow model from FS2004 scenery and aircraft MDL files. So ModelConverterX can now also render the custom shadow models from these MDL files.

I think you noticed putting a shadow is not really difficult on BGL.

On Aircraft model , at MS default SDK ,There is no ground shadows at Interior side model.

But when making a Wingview , adding a ground shadow is useful.
People who uses can feel the ground height during the landing and take off.
I've been doing those for a long time.

So May be it's good to have it on option switch of FS2004 Aircraft export.
Just a suggestion.

I am not sure what MakeMDL does in that case. The interior, exterior and shadow models are all compiled into the same MDL file. So are you saying the with the interior model the shadow model is normally not shown?
