• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

File size limit

Does anyone know if there is a file size limit to GMax scenery files or BGL files.
I have a BGL file which is 1.16 Megabytes and works fine. When I add to the model and it becomes 1.17 Megabytes or larger, most of it disappears when I check it in FS2004. It looks perfectly OK in GMax. I am using Windows ME and have not installed the FS update. Now tried XP with FS9.1 and the problem persists.....Now noticed that some terrain, airport and city BGL files are larger than this so it can't be the BGL that's too big. Summary info shows Objects: 228. Vertices: 14124, Faces: 27336.

I don't know if there is really a hard limit.

While testing CAT we noticed that around 1.35 MB was the maximum size of an object. When the object is bigger FS did crash. I think this is caused by one of the sections (animation tables, etc) being to big.

But what you report could indicate that there is really a maximum object size.

When there is a bigger BGL (which often occurs in a scenery), this is because these contain of multiple objects. The entire scene you export in GMax is seen as one object. Therefore it is also better to make a separate GMax file for each building/object.

It looks like this was caused by either using 1 texture to cover too many surfaces or (somehow) having 2 UVW Mapping modifiers applied to a lot of the objects (GMax has been crashing a lot when adding or removing textures).
I have covered some of the objects in a slightly different texture and removed the instances of having 2 UVW Mapping modifiers applied to the same object. This has solved the problem for the moment and I have successfully compiled a 1.18 Megabyte BGL. I will need to see if the problem occurs again as the model gets bigger. (The model is about 80 - 90% complete). I have no idea how I got to having the UVW Mapping modifier applied twice.
