• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Floating Buildings

I have had a similar problem mentioned about floating buildings from other blogs. I have tried everything from flattening below the building to changing the xml with no luck. What I don't understand is why the the offending hangers or buildings can't be lowered a few feet. I use Instant Scenery 2 that uses some generic FSX buildings and never have this problem also it is possible to use a negative altitude with Instant Scenery which will put the building above or below the ground level. There are so many beautiful hangers available from FSX it is a shame I can't use them at many locations.

An example is at Honolulu, PHNL. At certain locations the buildings seem fine. They lie flat on the ground. A few hundred feet away the same building floats 2 feet above the ground.

Has anyone come up with a way to really put the building on the ground? There must be a way.

Like I say, Instant Scenery seems to have no problem with Generic buildings.

The Floating Buildings are Generic Buildings, not Library Objects. This is a known bug with FSX. Unfortunately there is no way to set the altitude for a Generic Building. We think it has something to do with the 'Round Earth' model of FSX. Some people have tried placing a small apron under the building and that might work. There is a further problem with Generic Buildings that we are aware of in FSX and that is the positioning of them. Generic Buildings have their reference point at the center of the footprint but in some situations they are not drawn that way by the scenery engine but appear moved a bit.

This has nothing to do with the placement of Library Objects using Instant Scenery. In this case you can adjust the altitude of the object with respect to the ground so there is no need for them to float. Also we are not aware of any error when Library Object are placed at zero AGL.

Generic Buildings and Library Objects are different things.

Don't feel bad, even Holger Sandmann ran into this problem when adapting Vancouver+ to Orbx PNW:

Known Issues quote: "CBF4: adjacent two buildings float despite flatten"

Sometimes things in FSX just refuse to cooperate!

Thank's for the information. I figured that there was no hope after going through all of the FAQ's over the past years. I had hoped someone came up with a fix that was not yet posted. OH Well. I will use my own buildings and scenery if necessary. There are also plenty of buildings that have been created by the great people on FSDeveloper so it isn't the end of the world.

Yes, since using FSX I have had a love hate relationship with this version of flight simulator but I will stick with it.

I will try the small apron idea and see what happens. Nothing to loose.

Thank you for the quick reply's, that will save me from wasting time beating my head against the FSX wall. I finished Maui scenery and am moving on to Molokai at this time.

The only sure way is to replace the offending Generic Buildings with Library Objects

If a placement of buildings is made as an x-y offset, it will use the base lat-long-altitude for the offsets. That may be an issue.

There may be a bug in the sim that ignores altitude for other Generic buildings within the same BGL

Zip up a file and attach it, and we can all look at it.
