• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS and VR, I wonder

Hi,

I was reading about the new Virtual Reality stuff that they will show us in Las Vegas sometime soon and I just wondered what it would be like to have one of those Google (or other) glasses on and run FS and see it through those glasses.
Of course, FS is already a virtual world, but still, it would be nice if one could fully immerge in it.
Just a thought (whimsical as it may be).
Wondering if anybody would have some ideas on that?

Wouldn't it simply suffice to project the Windows desktop into whatever VR device you're using?
If this was possible, nothing would stop you from running FSX on a VR device.
Throw a SimConnect plugin into the mix that translates your head movement into eyepoint movements inside of FSX (akin to TrackIR) and you should be all set.

The idea of sitting at my desk with a big piece of headgear on is not inviting, let alone conducive to multitasking.

I also wonder about the mechanics of operating the keyboard and/or controller keys while locked in the VR.

If it allows me to reach out and change the COMM channels in the VC it might be more appealing. If I have to fumble around for my mouse, which I am assuming I can't see with the headset on, it would be less appealing.

cheers,
Lane

I for one am eagerly awaiting my Oculus headset to be delivered (sadly the wait time was already pushed as far as May by the time I got my order through). I know there's gonna be some logistical issues, but I just couldn't turn it down. Plus I've got plenty of applications to use it with aside from flight sim, so it'll get heavily used either way.

I wonder if some voice recognition software such as Game Commander 2 could be utilized for changing coms and other limited functions. I have used it as the interface for ATC instrument flights where I have programmed it for the numbers 1 thru 9 corresponding to the ATC prompts which freed me from looking down at the keyboard searching for numbers on the keyboard whilst trying to follow ATC course corrections. It works pretty well as long as it is limited to a small number of commands. Too many and they start sounding alike and you get the wrong outputs. It also goes sideways if there are too many birds chirping nearby. I had it programmed for landing gear and each time my lovebird several rooms away chirped, gear up,.... gear down.
And of course, if you are overheard mumbling 1...4...1...3...3...etc your family may become concerned.
Cheers
Gman

Hi fellows,

Thanks for putting me up to date.
Sounds like a lot is going on already in this respect but in 'beta'.
