• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello guys

I am new to scenery design, need help with polys,I have fs design studio V3,I have made a project and it is going well so far except for a few things,I have made a poly below the area of the project,I dont have a clue how to texture it or flatten it,I have been looking all over the web and have not found a tutorial or article explaining this situation clearly Maybe you guys can point me in the right direction i will much appreciate it.

Bump into the FSDS forum...

Your "poly below teh area of the project" is one part, am I correct? And you want to assign a texture to it?

The easiest way is to create a texture template (by default, you can choose either a 256x256 or 512x512 projection)

Basically, go to Part->Make Texture Template
and from the dialog box select "top" and the size you want.

Since I deal with aircraft parts which are not square, I also click "Preserve Aspect Ratio"

Click on "OK" and you will be prompted to save it (Save as) to your folder.

In your paint program, you'll then navigate to, and open that saved bitmap. You'll have to crop it to the square size chosen. By default, it's a greyscale image.

Assign it in FSDS by going to the texture assignment dialog (F4), etc as normal.

Note that Applying textures is covered in the help files (Design Workshop, Texturing basics)

Thanks that was much better discription than the help file :),now I just need to know how to flatten the poly so that the ground below the project is flat. Thanks once again mate

Now setting up ground polys ... that's definitely an area I can't help you with - I'm lucky enough to get a basic box as a scenery object, let alone a ground polygon!!

You can try SBuilderX (free and relatively friendly) to make a flatten under your project.

I have downloaded fsflatten but I cannot find any explanation on how to use it.Is SBuilderX a freeware program.Jeeze but it is hard to find something that can help me with this.

Welcome to the sometimes frustrating world of scenery design. Info can be very hard to find sometimes.

For FS9 you would need SBuilder not SBuilderX. But ADE is much easier to use for basic stuff like a flatten.

Can I use ADE for other scenery besides a airport and does it work for fsx as well,I am designing Popular landmarks and a few buildings ect..,I figured out how to use FSFlatten, the ground is flat now which is a good thing but the poly texturing just keeps on flickering to and from the fs ground textures and the poly textures. If ADE is a better program I shall then consider using it.Where can I find a good article for adding smoke with the effects to a chimney or something for fsx?

Robert

I had the same flickering problem with an helico air base. I tought that is was because the polygon was to near of the ground. In FSDS, I zommed in max on the basic polygon and raise it just a little bit; no more flickering.

Hi RobB

You can raise the poly up a tad as jpfil has suggested, I have also done this on a few projects and it works well, but I think in the long run you will like ADE as you can make flatted spots, remove autogen and put the texture you what down on the ground very easy.
Yes it works with FSX; FSX is what I am using it with.

You can add an effect such as smoke to an object made with FSDS very easily, I have been trying my hand at writing a few tutorials, I have written one called (Adding an effect to a object made with FSDS 3.5.1.htm) it is for adding a light but adding the smoke effect is done the same way just sub the smoke effect instead of the light effect.
Look in the tutorial section

Hope it helps H_Farfy:D
