• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX FS Panel Studio

I have FS Panel Studio and want to get started on editing Virtual Cockpits in FS Panel Studio

I read on the FSPS website that some gauge placement in the virtual cockpits can be edited in FS Panel Studio, but the 3D geometry needed to be edited in the model.cfg file. I can't seem to find where I can edit the virtual cockpits. So I need a tip on how to get started on editing the virtual cockpits in FS Panel Studio.

Thanks

Not the clearest explanation. 3D virtual cockpits with 3D modelled gauges are tied into a model via aircraft.cfg, but all that does is tell the sim which VC model to display. You cannot edit the VC model via the config, only change which VC is displayed. It is possible in theory to change a 747 model to have the VC of a Sopwith Camel...

To edit a VC model you need the source files and the modelling software. FSPS edits and creates XML gauges to display on a gauge panel, not 3D ones.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it when people take the time to answer questions like that.

If you don't mind, I have a few more questions I'd like to ask. First of all, do you know the name of the modeling software I should use?

Thanks

The problem with what you want to do is you really need the source files, not the FS .mdl file(s), and these are seldom available and not at all with current payware. If you had a source file, you'd need the software which matched it: .gmax uses Gmax (free), .max comes from 3ds Max (really expensive), .fsc is FSDS (modestly priced payware) and .blend needs Blender (free). These are then compiled to .mdl format.

You'll find many of us pick our modelling software and then roll our own models: much to learn there is, young padawan. Since you now have FS Panel Studio, why not have a bash with that and re-panel some cockpit which uses XML gauges? A lot of the stock FSX models do, either in a full 2D cockpit panel or in a 3D cockpit model with 2D panel(s) and gauges alongside the 3D modelled ones.

So, are you saying that I can add 2D gauges to a VC with FSPS, but FSPS can't add 3D gauges to VCs? I read that FSPS can be used to swap an existing gauge in the VC with another one. Is that what you are talking about?

Thanks again

2D gauges are displayed on a gauge polygon, which might be a complete 2D cockpit panel or a part of a 3D cockpit (MFD or Garmin are usual suspects). FSPS can edit these, but not a 3D modelled rate of climb indicator for example.

Ok, I get it now. It's pretty much impossible to edit the VCs unless I have the source files.

Thanks for your time.
I appreciate it.
