• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS9 Objects in FSX

Hi All,

I'm in the early stages of scenery design for FSX, using only SBuilderX and the SDK Object Placement Tool so far. I have searched the forums for information on using my old scenery libraries in FSX and conclude that it can be done but I haven't found any thing about how to do it. I'm hoping someone can tell me what programs other than OPT have the capability and where I need to put my library folder and associated texture folder. I think SBuilderX can place the objects, but I don't know how to tell it where the Library is.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Larry

Hi Larry,

If you just install your Fs2004 libraries in FsX, then the objects should appear in the Mission Object Placement tool already and you can then place them in that way. Since you are already using that tool, as guess that is the easiest approach for you.

Thanks Arno. I installed my custom libraries in the FSX Add-on scenery folder in the same way that they in FS9, but the FSX Object Placement Tool doesn't recognize them. I guess I'm not smart enough to figure out where they should be placed.

The libraries I want to use consist of the bgl, xml and text files. They were made from FSDS3 and EZ-Library Manager.

I apologize for my lack of insight.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry,

You don't need the XML or TXT files in FsX. Once you install the library BGL in an active scenery folder, the objects do appear in the Object Placement tool. But they do not appear with a name, they appear with their GUIDs in the list (with a zero added in front). So that makes them a bit harder to spot maybe.

Hi Arno,

Now I see! The custom libraries are there alright, but there are 4 GUID values for each line in the OPT and I can only select the first one. Do I need to remove the xml and text files from the active scenery folder?

Thanks very much for your help.

Larry

Hi Larry,

Using the GUID to identify an object is not really easy to use indeed. But there is not much that can be done about that at this moment.

FS will not use the TXT or XML file, so you can safely remove it to keep your folders clean. On the other hand, keeping them there does not harm either.

Thanks very much Arno. You are right- finding those custom objects is very difficult. Let's hope that someone (like you for instance) writes a program that can overcome the lack of backward compatibility in FSX.

Thanks again,

Larry

It's not even backwards compatibility that is the problem, the same happens if you insert new FsX style objects as well. So it seems the names in the Object Placement tool are hardcoded somewhere for the default objects only.
