• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

i use fsds 3.5.1 for static scenery. i am using gmax 1.2 for my first aircraft build. i am new to this, so that makes me a noob, or is it dweeb?. as i use both it probably makes me a dwoob.i am whizzing around gmax with ease. it was tough at first, but know i am very comfortable with it. this applies to modelling only at the moment, i am constantly remodelling all my components
as refinements reveal themselvses...

i will have to master both photo and self designed texturing using paint shop pro x2,lithunwrap,etc...
i will have to master animation,effects,sound,air,3dvc interactive.etc.its daunting....my weapons are, stubborness, painstaking attencsion to detail, and
a completely irrational faith in my own ability.notice i spelt attencsion wrongly.
question, how do i use fsds to make dummy files for my gmax aircraft,is this a
good idea, and will it save me some work, or is there an easier way as a temporary way of putting of building my own air files etc.or am i being silly...jim

I'm not even going to try to tell you to stick to one program (I should talk, as I have FSDS 1 2 3 loaded up as well as gmax, AC3D, TrueSpace7, blender, ... etc

In it's most basic form,

Set up FSDS with the backdrop images as if you were going to model in FS.

Set up your reference parts (gear.center, gear.left, etc)

merely for visual cues, create basic shapes to locate your models structure - wings, fuselage, tires, for example.

Do your first, non-textured, non animated compile to "set" the files in FS-X.

Using Arno's MOdelConvertX, import your fsc, and export as 3DS into gmax.

Your reference parts and basic body structure should now be in gmax.

Remember to either discard the reference parts (once you don't need them anymore) or set them as a separate group of parts, and freeze them in gmax.

You next compiled model should strictly be the MDL file, to replace the first FSDS created MDL.

(Suggestion = keep that first MDL.....)

thanks for the info, i have a theory. fsds was very user friendly, it didnt make many demands, i couldnt get the nice clean shape i wanted..i thought it was fsds...i switched to gmax, it forced me to actually learn the hard way..if i went back to fsds, i think i could end up with identicle models..

its the knowledge, not the tools..artistic integrity seems the most important at the moment,ie how to build a simple model that looks complicated.rather than a complicated model that looks complex..my first attempt with fsds was the lovell radio telescope at jodrel bank..i was quite pleased with myself, until fsds informed me that it had more vertices than atoms in the known universe.

back to the drawing board, followed by eventual success.i have in the past made single cylinder engine camshafts from a billet of steel armed only with a set of hand files, and a linisher. i am stubborn, or crazy, probably both..thanks for the heads up ...jim
