• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSDS Setup

Having an awful time setting up FSDS according to instructions and need some help please.

In the Help>Overview>Systems requirements, it states I need msxml.msi and NETCFSetupv2.msi . I did a search on my new computer (OS Windows 7 -64bit) and couldn't find either. I went to Microsoft and downloaded msxml.msi , and dotnetfx.exe which is the file I get when downloading NET Framework v2 which is supposed to have NETCFSetupv2.msi ..confused yet? try typing it :)

So here are my questions:

1. msxml.msi - downloaded it but where does this file go?

2. NETCFSetupv2.msi - I ran the dotnetfx.exe but get the error "external installer has stopped working". I have NET Framework 4 on my computer. Is Net Framework v2 just an older version or 4 or is it a different program altogether and if successful installing would it mess up Framework4? Where could I get just the NETCFSetupv2.msi file and what folder would it go in?

I have Microsoft SDK installed and path to the MakeMDL and BglComp set.

I apologize if this is basic stuff but it's something I don't understand. I am successful in creating a scenery object but just can't get it to convert to XML so at a standstill
Thanks for your help
Best
Vern

Hi Vern
It’s been awhile since I have installed but we should be able to get you going.

I think you just double click on the msxml.msi and it installs in the proper folder.
You can get it here.

Same thing with NET Framework 4 download it and just run it.

I see you have Windows 7 DO NOT install FSDS in the program folder on C drive, this will cause you problems.

Put it in a folder directly on C drive or another drive if you have one.

Like this

C:\Abacus

Many thanks for your rely ..:)

I ran the msxml.msi as you said and got the Modify/Repair/Uninstall option so I assume it is already on my computer although the search did not show it. Anyhow it does now.

Did the same with NET Framework 4 and it did install. Framework 2 would not. I did a search for NETCFSetupv2.msi and this file still does not show up anywhere but is must work as I managed to compile my object.

The good news is I compiled my project in XML and BGL and it worked as far as the compile is concerned. The BGL loaded into the scenery but the texture is only partially displaying on the hanger. I only have 1 texture for this Bgl file. Next question is how does one set the heading for the object .. there is no option in the Project Properties for this.

As for the XML I started ADE and loaded my scenery. I selected File>Import XML but got the error "Failed to Decompile the BGL" Once I learn how to do this (from reading other posts Library Creator seems the way to go) this is the method I prefer to use as one can select the object size and heading .

As for installing FSDS in the C:\ directory, I picked that up on another post;) and did as you said.
Thanks again
Vern

I am not sure what went wrong with the texture?? Just make sure you have the textures in the correct texture folder.

While working on a new project I always make a BGL with FSDS and install it directly into the sim, so as to make this faster and easier, I set heading later on final scenery with ADE.

When I am happy with the object I then make a MDL not a XML file and install this into ADE.

Where is ModelDef.xml

This is my first message!
When I purchased FSDS a long time ago, I kept seeing , 'FSDS needs to know the location of the ModelDef.xml file'.
I tried many things without success and finally gave up, having (unbelievably) more important things to do!
I want to try again, so HELP PLEASE!! Where do I find the ModelDef.xml file PLEASE?

The default path should look something like this unless you installed the SDK someplace else.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\bin

Thanks

HI Farfy!
Thanks for the info. Will try it out later, but at present I am busy looking after my wife, who had a spinal operation recently.
My many occupations in my 75 years, come in very useful.
Looking forward to being a contributing member of this excellent Forum.
I lived in the States from 1963 to 1970 and visited your lovely part of the world several times, partly to look for relatives, without success.

A VERY HEALTHY 2012 TO ALL

Both of you- remember it may be advantageous to configure your setup to do xtomdl instead of makemdl. You can always switch back if you want to make something for FS9. I'm too lazy to do that. Taht is why I still have a copy of FSDS 3 hanging around.

You probably have done all this already, but if not I could show you how, but Farfy could probably show you how a bit quicker than I could. Bob

Wonderful! Scott is a fine man. I edit his website. He gets me out of tight spots! hahaha. Keep in touch. I've learned many neat tricks from him. Keep an eye on his website. Bob
