• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi all, It's been a while since I used FSDS3, now I will try and use FSDS3.5. looking over the setup info, It looks like if I use MakeMDL I should use the MakeMDL from fs2004, even for FSX models. Is this correct.thanks.

With FSDS 3.5 you can set it up to

Make models for FS2004 with the FS2004 SDK

Make models for FS-X with the FS2004 SDK

Make models for FS-X with the FS-X SDK.

You must first install the appropriate SDK (FS2004 and/or FS-X), and then, in FSDS3.5, set up the preferences accordingly.

Felix,

If the MDL files are intended for use in FSX, but are compiled with the FS9 MakeMDL (?) tool will these models display proper LODs? Wondering, as a project I am looking at for a developer has many, many objects (MANY objects!), which as FSX MDL files don't get the benefits of multi-LODs and display out into eternity. FSX MDL files can pickup the LOD benefits if there is some type of animation attached to one of the LODs, or so I've read!

Performance issues dictate some type of cutback on the display of objects, not including the scenery density slider. The project is built around the levels of objects on display, just not stretching out for 20 miles.

Any thoughts by you or anyone else would be appreciated.

HI LCSims

I think if you are building for FSX then compile as a true FSX object is a better way to go that FS9, and yes to get the benefits of LOD in an FSX object all you need to do is add a animated part, a single polygon will do, its been a while since I did this but I don’t think you even need to add any key frame setting just name it ambient you get an error saying something about empty animation but it still works.
