• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Airplane Modeling Help

Hey,
can anyone point me in the direction of some good tutorials or articles.....once you've modelled your airplane.

I followed the P38 tutorial last night in Gmax, got my plane semi finished. But Im struggling to get it into FSX.

Ive exported it to an mdl file.
I added a folder under simobjects\airplanes called P38
I added a model folder, put the mdl in there, along with a simple model.cfg file.
I added panel, sound and texture folders, empty for now.
Added an aircraft.cfg file, actually copied it from another aircraft folder, just renamed the obvious fields.
Also copied an air file from another folder, renamed it.

But my plane still doesnt appear in FSX.

So Im looking for a guide into actually creating your plane once you've modelled it.

For example, what are you actually supposed to use to create the air file?
Questions like that.

Im not trying to run before I can walk. I certainly dont expect a fully working miracle. I'm just trying to see my newly modeled plane, appear in FSX.

Any response gratefully appreciated.

Luca

Read the "simobject container SDK" in the "simobject creation kit" section of the SDKs, it will explain what you are missing.

As a start point: your aircraft must have it's own identity (title) in the aircraft config (in fact every single paintjob must).

You can borrow the sound , airfile and .cfg etc from another aircraft as a start point but you must change the title, manufacturer and variant sections of the aircraft.cfg.

Borrrow a panel too or the sim will think your aircraft is AI only and not a flyable craft

And, once you do get it set up, you'll find the P38 flying "backwards" in the sim...

...'cause there's an error in that tutorial that has you build everything 180º rotated.

To "fix" it, simply select all the parts and use the Rotate tool to point the 'nose' to the left when looking at the Left Side Viewport. ;)

Cool, thanks chaps - I'll check that out. btw, I definitely created a GUID and the name in the object properties.
So there's actually something in the SDK under Simobjects for creating the air file? I mustve completely missed it then. I'll go back and read through it again tonight.
