• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Autogen Crashes

I'm running into an odd situation where some of the autogen I placed on a photo scenery is causing FSX to crash. The good news is that it's simple tiles that are crashing. The complex areas with hundreds of buildings and lots of vegetation are fine. I'm glad I don't have to delete them and try again.

The first time it happened, I found the offending agn file and deleted it. I did another version using vegetation rectangles instead of polygons and the tile worked. Now I have several other agn files that are causing crashes, but rebuilding them has not worked.

Has anyone else run into this and maybe found a fix?

I've had a couple of problems with FSX autogen, which I've tracked down to complex vegetation regions. This caused CTDs with no error message.
I now tend to keep vege regions simple, and keep away from concave shapes. I'd rather use lots of simpler shapes than one big complex shape.

This is strange. I tried moving all the autogen files to a backup directory. Then I moved the largest, most complex ones back and everything was okay. I moved smaller files back, down to 2k and still no crashes. Apparently I'm having trouble with the 1k files only. They're the only ones I can see causing the crashes.

I noticed this as well....here is my theory

The vegetation polygons seem to have a quite a low coordinate precision (presumably to keep agn file sizes low) This is evidenced by drawing a vegetation poly on a defined and accurate boundary such as the edge of a stream etc - Youll see that the vegetation extends into the water when your polygon did not.....this shift seems to be around 50m?

I seem to think that this is the cause of the problem- If, for example, you draw a thin polygon, such as along a thin shelter belt, the low precision of the coordinates may mean that self intersecting polygons are created??

Ive just gone back to the old Vegetation blocks for now....

I've done some more experimenting with it and I think the cause is actually drawing vegetation areas that are too large. The crashes I got were in areas where I drew large rectangles or polygons that spanned across agn tile areas. That seems to be why my tiles with the smallest file sizes were causing the crashes. I have some smaller complex polygons that work fine.

I'm recreating the problem areas now and keeping the vegetation polygons within or nearly within a single agn square. This is working. I haven't had any crashes since.

Yep- I did some more experimentation and I agree- It definitely seems to be related to the size of the Autogen areas....it doesnt like large ones.:(

I don't know. I have found that limiting the autogen to two squares works. FSX hasn't crashed since I've been using two tiles as a maximum.

I think I've gotten as far as 3 but I think there is one that had 4. My current project has reminded me how much ass-pain placing autogen can be. I had forgotten since it was so long since I did Tucson.:(

In FS9 it created problems when autogen spanned a cell boundary. That may be more the issue. I don't allow the polys to cross boundaries.
