• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Error: "This graphics card does not meet minimum requirements"

I am wondering if any of you can help me out, I'm at my wits end.

I installed an EVGA GeForce GTX 660 TI+ 915MHZ 3GB 6.0GHZ GDDR5 and have been having issues with it. I installed 306.81 WHQL and deleted my fsx.cfg. When I pressed the FSX.EXE on the taskbar I received the following message:

"This graphics card does not meet minimum requirements for shader support. This product requires a geForce3/Radeon8500 class or better graphics card. FSX will now exit."

In the event viewer I found that there was a G3D.dll error associated to the crash. I tried using the FSX.EXE in the FSX root folder and reverted to an older driver and 306.23 WHQL but I received the same error message. I deleted the shader folders in my AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX folder thinking that the shaders need to be rebuilt. I use Mogwaisoft Shade.

I installed the new driver as per the manufacturer and even tried using Driver Sweeper in safe mode but I just can't get the FSX.cfg to rebuild with this new card.

I would appreciate any feedback, thanks.

Robert

The newest shaders have been a hassle with new games that have recently come out. I had heard that people were putting in new shaders into FSX (I use P3D).

From what I have heard, if you have older graphics cards, they cannot handle some of the new Shaders.

Hope you can work your way back to where you were.

Hi,

Does it work with just a default fsx installation? It sounds you did quite some tweaking.

I re-installed my EVGA GTX 570 and FSX runs fine now. I forgot to mention however that a few weeks back when I first installed the updated NVIDIA driver the fsx.cfg would not rebuild either. The only way to get back to FSX running without the error was to use system restore.

I am running FSX with Acceleration and tons of addons. The only tweaks are to NVIDIA Inspector to run FSX and the fsx.cfg itself once it is rebuilt. I only make changes to Inspector once the fsx.cfg is rebuilt as well.

... a few weeks back when I first installed the updated NVIDIA driver the fsx.cfg would not rebuild either...

This is why some of us are slow to update video drivers on a development rig, driver updates are a potential risk to a working setup. I think it's about 18 months since I last updated mine to a known good update.

Glad to hear you got it sorted!

Yes, I got it sorted in one way... going back to my old GPU but I still cannot run the new GPU without receiving the error.

.... and of course, the custom Shaders, which may have been the thing Arno was referring to.

That would seem to be the most likely incompatibility ... even uses its own rendition of g3d.dll from memory.

Oh I see what you mean now, ok, I will try to uninstall Shade and see what happens. Thanks for the info.

I installed the EVGA GTX 660TI and installed WHQL 306.97 drivers, I then removed the Shade folder from within the FSX root folder rebooted, deleted fsx.cfg and tried the FSX.exe and received the same error. I then reinstalled Shade and deleted the fsx.cfg and received the same error.

I don't understand why it is not working with the new video card, Shade/FSX runs fine when I revert to the old card, I have run dxdiag and it says that DirectX11 is up to date.

Am I just having bad luck with the EVGA GTX 660TI? I am afraid of trying another card so I am going to stick with what I have although in order for the GTX 570 to work after trying the GTX 660 TI I have had to run system restore each time. I just hope there aren't any long term effects on my system due to this.

I have given up on installing a new card on this system.

I am oretty sure there will be people running FSX with 660 series cards (certainly lots of people with 670 and 680 cards) so that shouldn't be it.

Remembering of course that FSX uses DX9 (or DX10) runtimes ... so the DX11 version will not be entirely relevant, as it is not used.

I had once an issue with the g3d.dll file, can't remember when and why, but I think (if I remember well) I solved the issue installing that file again from an older fsx isntallation which still remained in the hard disk. save me a couple of hours and hadache reinstalling all. problably no have nothing to do but it's anecdotic.

My question is why on earth are you removing/deleting your existing and presumably working fsx.cfg file?

There is no reason to do so, as FSX will auto-detect your new video card and simply change the entry in your fsx.cfg file for the new one...

As for updating drivers (both nVidea and Radeon), that's a crap shoot at best. A few days ago I foolishly allowed my new development machine to install a updated "Catalyst Control Center"...

...after the machine rebooted, it would no longer recognize nor use my second monitor! I had to use System Restore to regain the use of my second monitor...

It's not.

(On Windows 7: )

- Uninstall drivers
- Reboot
- Let default driver install
- Reboot
- Run Driver Sweeper or similar
- Reboot
- Install new drivers
- Reboot
- Set up new drivers
- Reboot just to make sure

Never had a problem after adopting this procedure.

I have given up on this card, I have done everything short of updating the BIOS.

I would like to express my thanks to all of you that have replied... back to enjoying the sim that I have grown to love.

Take care everybody,

Robert
