• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hello all,

Is there a document that explains the flight dynamics in FSX? I found one here but it is kind of old.

I want to know this because someone told me that FSX is "just a game" and FS2004 does the flight dynamics "better" than FSX.

Considering that the "flight dynamics" for FSX is the exact same, identical system as FS9, that is simply a rediculous claim based on complete ignorance.

For all practical purposes in fact, the flight dynamics used in FS2000, FS2002, FS2004, and FSX hasn't altered all that much since Tom Goodrick's seminal paper was authored... ;)

No, there isn't such a document, or at least none I've ever found!
 
Mike's paper is excellent, but still very generic. It doesn't actually explain anything of practical consequence in dealing with the precise "nuts-and-bolts" of the .air file nor the aircraft.cfg file, which is what the OP is actually wanting. :D
 
The latest Prepar3d SDK has a bit on AIR files, including the ASM files used the generate them, along with an asm2air compiler. I'm not sure if the file format has changed from what's used for FSX, though.

I suggest Michael Zyskowski's paper is of value. Agreed it doesn't offer a step-by-step guide how to manage flight dynamics but it does give background information that is helpful in conjunction with that provided by developers of air file editors

It shows the use of 6 degree-of-freedom dynamic equations, which are textbook standard. The only simplifying assumption is that aircraft are symetrical port to stbd so that the cross-products of interia Iyz and Ixy are zero and need not be included.

It also describes the aerodynamic coefficents used and the fact that there are basically linear with only certain limited non-linear modifiers - again all very standard.

It's all useful to avoid attempting the impossible!
