• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Fsx hires default scenery question

Hi, I've just been looking at the bmp scenery textures in FSX/SCENERY/GLOBAL/TEXTURES folders and they look pretty hi-res to me. Just wondering why I don't see them covering the terrain at that quality. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

Hi,

Do you mean the landclass textures used on the default terrain? Each texture is assigned to a terrain grid of around 1.2 x 1.2 kilometer in size. So if the texture is 1024 pixels wide, you get a resolution of around 1 meter per pixel. The texture quality slides in the options do also influence which resolution is shonw.

Hi Arno,

I've been running FSX at 4096 pixels using the TML app as I do have aircraft with that resolution. What I see for the terrain, say at 2000 feet, is quite bland compared to the bmps in the FSX/SCENERY/GLOBAL/TEXTURES folders.
I do have the texture quality sliders on maximum. All sliders on max actually.

If I remember correctly for the land class it will never show more than 1024 pixels.

Thanks Arno. I might try my hand to make some custom GP 2048 square tiles for the surrounding airport using those bmp files. Already looking much better than the default.
Am I correct in thinking that any custom Ground Poly in ADE has to lie on completely flat ground or are gradual slopes ok?

Chris, Ground Polys have to be on flat ground. The flatten and the ground poly have to be at the exact same altitude. If your ground poly is going to cover the airport flatten then the ground poly, the airport flatten, and the airport altitude have to be at the exact same number. Also ground polys by default suppress all autogen objects.

Thank you Ed. Good to know. I haven't got the ADE manual to hand, is there a way to allow autogen on ground polys?

If you convert your flat model with the ground poly wizard in Arno's MCX tool you can specify not to suppress autogen. I've never used the ground poly tool in ADE so I don't know if there is a similar option.
