• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

The game pack is out for FSX and the question is what will scenery designers do?
If they're payware designers they will of course flood the net with new mesh, photo realistic terrain, and all manner of crap that they will hope to make a buck off of.

Sound harsh, well it should. In my experience with flight sim there have been just a few scenery designers out there that have made the sim environment better - most have chose to just make it deferent, for a quick buck.

Very few have used the SDK's to enhance the default world in a particular area using the default textures and objects for enhancement - so the hard core simmer pays countless dollars for add on scenery that looks great while your flying through a relatively small area-but then then throws you back into the default world-a change as different as night and day.

With the release FSX there is a new canvas to paint, and what will that turn out to be? More of the same redone again, or will scenery designers choose to use the tools for this new canvas to make it better rather than different. Will they choose to correct land class using default textures so all blends well, or will they continue a patch work quilt of small areas, with a few custom textures that may be awe inspiring within a few square miles, but then leave you flat.

What will the future bring in FSX?

Hi there,

strange post, IMO.

Obviously, we all have specific ideas of what we'd like "our" sim to look and feel like. That doesn't give me or you the right to call other people's efforts "crap" or expect that every add-on developer works to enhance the sim in the manner you or I want it to be.

A forum like this is meant to share ideas and knowledge about all manners of add-on development and not to be judgemental about specific types of methods or projects. I really don't see much evidence that people are doing "the same old" things again; in fact, FSX pretty much forces add-on developers to use new approaches and that's what I see happening.

Cheers, Holger

Hmmm. Never crossed my mind that payware scenery designers would be able to make a quick buck doing this. I've been almost exactly 50 weeks in the full-time business of producing flightsim scenery, so I'd certainly like to know where these quick bucks are coming from:)
I've always thought that most payware scenery designers do it for pretty much the same reasons I do it -- because I love it, and I think there's a real need for more quality scenery.
For that reason I'm happy (at the moment) to have given up a reasonably good job for half the income I used to have.
I understand that my scenery isn't for everybody. I wouldn't expect you to rush out and buy it, it tends to be localised, custom-built objects and photographic textures which do nothing for the rest of the world. However that's what I do, and I do it with a set of business and personal principles which may surprise you. The thing is, though, I'd expect most scenery designers to have the same motivation, goals, principles -- and poor income -- that I have.

I think most things have already been said by the previous two replies.

First the kind of scenery you like depends on the kind of flying you do in FS. So when you are flying VFR you probably want a relative small area to have a lot of detail. While if you are flying IFR you cover larger distances (from a greater altitude) and in that case you probably want less detail but a bigger area covered.

But of course the fact that you use FS in a different way, does not mean that the other kind of addons are crap. A lot of other users will probably be very happy with them.

I think the FsX SDKs offer some very nice new techniques we can use to enhance the FS world further. So I am sure we will see a lot of cool addons appear in the future. And please keep in mind that this forum is meant for addon developers to discuss their techniques, problems, etc. So we want to have a constructive discussion that solves problems and helps people to have fun making their addons.

I don't think saying that most things out there are crap is such a discussion. But maybe you are trying to ask how do I make a cool FsX addon using the latest SDK tools? In that case we are happy to discuss it here :).
