• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX SE v. PREPAR3D

Greetings to anyone that can help; I'm about to make a change to PREPAR3D. Can you tell me, will I have to uninstall all my Add-on Scenery and switch my PMDG Aircraft to this "PREPAR3D?" I have no knowledge about the PREPARD3 Platform. Also, what are the Pros of having PREPAR3D? Someone in one of the forums suggested that I move to PREPAR3D; and what version should I get? Thank you in advance, Claude

Hi Claude,

all of your addons that are currently installed in to your FSX SE version won't be "transfered over" to a new P3D Install - you will have to reinstall them and in some cases buy a new license for them.
These two Simulators are different programs - also, as far as i know, the license for a FSX PMDG Product is not valid for the same product under P3D.

So, if you have the 747 for your FSX SE you will have to rebuy it to aquire the P3D license.

The biggest "Pro" switching to P3D would be that it's a 64bit platform - meaning there should be no more OOM (out of memory) errors (in theory).

My question would be - why do you want to abandon your FSX ?
What are you looking for in a new sim ?

There is also X-Plane and of course the new MS Flightsim 2020 - so plenty to choose from i guess.

Hey Brother, thanks for responding to my inquiry; so, I didn't know that PREPAR3D is a Flt. Sim Platform. The biggest "Pro" switching to P3D would be that it's a 64bit platform. This is why I need to switch; FSX SE is a 32bit platform, and I'm running Windows 10 and a complete 64bit OS. So, I guess I'm going to switch. The Out of memory is what I encounter, every blue moon. Do you have MS FS 2020? The first day it was released, I paid in advance, and asked for a refund within 2 days. It was NOT ready to be released. Please, see the Screen Shots......and these are just a few of everything that was wrong with 2020.

My last question before I spend the $60.00 for PREPAR3D V4, So PREPAR3D is a Flight Simulator Program like FSX, STEAM, and X Plane 11? Thanks.....

I believe you have made a snap assessment, that does not properly serve your interests. Prepar3d is a development platform to train military and professionals about procedures related to flight simulation. It is specifically designed to teach aspects of reality, that are simulated, in order to prevent consequences. For example, P3D simulates weapons deployment, so real life explosions do not occur. Most notably, P3D is NOT designed to simulate real life flight as closely as technology allows, unlike Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

Then there is the development of the simulator itself. Prepar3d was purchased from the development code of FSX. This means that P3D is, at best, a refinement of the Microsoft Flight Simulator X that was released in 2009. MSFS is an entirely new beast, deploying all the latest enhancements of connectivity and graphics. The scenery in MSFS literally, I cannot emphasize this enough, the scenery updates while you fly - with real world information. That one fact alone, should place MSFS head and shoulders above any other flight simulator, unless you work for Raytheon, or Academi, or some such.

I do not know if the glitches that you documented have been addressed yet, I am still setting up the computer I purchased specifically to run MSFS, but I am confident that patches and updates will be a constant and nearly seamless aspect of the experience of MSFS.

I do understand what PREPAR3D is; and I do not have MSFS 2020; and won't re-install it until PMDG comes out with the 747 and the 777 for that Sim. I'm asking, is PREPAR3D, a Flight Simulator Platform? Just like the FSX SE Edition that I'm currently running now? Except it's a 64bit, and I won't have the OOM anymore; that's what I'm asking. 2020 was unlike any Sim, and I've been flying it since Flt. Sim 98 came out. 2020 had soooo many flaws for $120.00 dollars, that I refused to let them keep my money; they weren't ready. I just need to know, before I waste my money, that PREPAR3D "IS" a Flt. Sim? Just like the others, with the exceptions......Thanks again, Claude.

IMHO - P3d is an updated version of FSX code. It is 64bit and uses a new simconnect with a number of extra commands. Most of the a/c from FSX will work here.
The biggest improvement, in my opinion is that all the maps(scenery) have been updated and now are very accurate. FSX-SE had very inaccurate maps especially coastlines. This is now fixed in P3D.
You will need your FSX-SE aircraft as P3D is mostly attack aircraft.

BernB, Thanks Man! So, if I buy PREPAR3D V4 Academic License for $59.95 from the PREPAR3D Store, this has the new 64bit Flight Sim just like FSX SE? And if not; where do I buy the PREPAR 3D Flight Simulator from?

This is almost exactly like FSX-SE except they have compiled to 64 bit. Keyboard keys everything is the same so if you are familiar with FSX then no change with P3D. Only changes are as I mentioned the simconnect has some extra variables and events to manage the guns, bombs etc. and they have completely redone the scenery to make it very accurate, unlike FSX.

I only see P3D v5 on the store https://www.prepar3d.com/prepar3d-store/ for $59.95. The menus and setup screens are different but flying is the same. Uses DX12 so you also need a faster computer and more powerful graphics card.

I too am waiting for all the bugs to be ironed out of MSFS2020.

BernB, Again, Thanks Man! My Rig is Good to Go! Intel, i7 8700 and The GTX 1660 Super. P3D v4 is in the bottom left-hand corner of the P3D Home Page. It say's "Click to expand." Yes, MSFS 2020 Is A Mess. Did you see my screenshots? I won't buy it again until PMDG comes out with the 747 and the 777 for that Sim. Thank you again comrade......

Yup see it now.

Any reason you prefer P3Dv4 to v5? Same price and V5 seems newer and more powerful.

Yes, I've seen some remarkable scenery that only is compatible with P3Dv4 and below; it isn't for v5 I'll probably end up getting v5. When I heard 2020 was coming out and saw the scenery, I did nothing to FSX SE; except Flightbeam PHX, Drzewiecki Design New York + airports; and Mega Rio de Janeiro. Since the Big disappointment of MSFS 2020, I decided to go with P3D and stay there. It will be my ultimate Sim......
