FSX SP1 will not load?

Hey all,

Has anyone had this happen, and is there a fix? I have been trying for 2 days now to get the FSX SP1 update in FSX. I have even deleted and reloaded FSX two times. Nothing works. I have FSX on an alternate drive.

I have tried placing the SP1 update in the FSX folder as well and run it from there. It says its installed, but the planes (addons) are still messed up. This has never happened before.

I have run the Flight1 Registry fixer also hoping that it might fix this issue.

Many thanks for any advice.

Gets up, gets wallet, goes out to car, drives up to Walmart, buys FSX Gold. Drives home. Gets out. Places FSX Gold under tires, gets back in car, drives back and fourth over box of CD's for 15 min's until heightened level of stress subsides and a calm appearance returns to face, blood pressure levels back to normal, breathing is steady again, eyebrows relax instead of pointing straight out of forehead.

Sorry, man. Never had any problem like yours. I don't install to the default location, either. You are running FS before each update?

Bob

Hey Bob,

Roger that and yes. I had that warning from SOH and started running between updates. Didnt work yet.

That's a real pain Bill! I had some exasperation myself recently with reinstalls, although not with FSX. Only by going through my system and removing all traces of the originals could I get a successful reinstall.

Is the SDK still installed? Might have something to do with it, arrgghhhhh.

Hey Tom,

Yep, FSX SDK is installed and amazingly works fine. (Maybe thats the problem, he he). But, for some reason, SP1 refuses to update.

From what it seems to be doing, I think 'it' thinks it has installed already, as it ends pretty early and says 'Finished', so it must be finding a tag somewhere that says it has already done this and ends the installation early.

My day of rest today, which I need away from the computer or I may overload and freak out. But... I may try reloading all of FSX once again and see if that will help, (though I have already done that).

<sigh... >

With a cobbled-up installation of FSX you may need to wipe all traces of the sim and SDK from the system.

The tool discussed in the above link may damage other files, so use only if in total despair.

Our Wiki has instructions for the proper install sequence. I believe it is:

fsx from disk
fsx sdk from disk
fsx_sp1_ENU.exe
( copy the FSX Gmax Gamepack over to Gmax )
fsx_sdk_sp1a.exe
fsx_sp2_ENU.msi
SP2_sdk.msi

The person that started that thread did things in the wrong order. You can't uninstall a program folder, then try to uninstall the software. You must uninstall then go to Appliction Data, delete the FSX folder, then run Ccleaner. And run it more that once, until no problems are found. I've had to run it 3 or 4 times, sometimes.

Bob

I feel your pain...

Had FSX running great on my gaming rig. Then it suddenly, and with no warning, refused to run ever again. I too have uninstalled, wiped my system of FSX, and reinstalled it numerous times with no success. I completely gave up after a weeks worth of stress and aggravation...

Funny part is no other software or game has an issue with that same PC. It's almost like FSX is jealous I fly and develop for FS9 more often so it just refuses to cooperate... LOL!

Hey Khaos,

Roger that. I believe that it was the efforts of Aces to make the game to run on Windows without a CD in the drive to keep people from pirating the game. However, their approach seems to have been a little overkill and has caused many people alot of problems when reloading the system...

I remember being on the Beta team and asking them if they could make FSX a CD-less run-game where we didnt have to have a CD always in the slot like the basic FS9 was. I pointed out that many Microsoft products (such as Windows and Windows Offic) and countless other software addons that are payware and famous 'do not use a CD in the drive to run'. I think Windows Office could have helped them out as I have never had issues with that program before.

Anyways, lol... No FSX SP1 update. No one at HQ to ask. It appears to be no fix or way to repair this. I can only hope that redeleting and reloading this 'might' enable the SP1 update to work.

One guy said I need to go out and buy a new i7 Quad core computer, that he did and that fixed everything for him. heh... I replied, what if I go out and get this computer, and this happens with it also?

Well... I had an issue with activation a little bit ago, I dunno if that fix would work here...
Create a new dummy account in Windows (as if for a new user) with Administrator permissions. Then install FSX as normal into the new account. After installation, that account can be safely and permenently deleted.
Worked a charm for me with the activation. No idea if it would help here.

Probably worked on a new computer because it was a clean Windows install. I'm not saying you should reinstall Windows. You should be able to clean up your installation enough to make it work.

I recall one problem I had(not with FS) where I needed to run three different registry cleaners before things worked properly. No one should have to do that. It seems extreme, but that's what it took.

But he could install Fsx, by what is said it's sp1 what can't be installed, it's so?
Anyway have you tried install fsx and all the updates but not installing the sdk and his "updates".

He must've been made of money...

Well, at first I thought it was because I'm a fanatical AMD user, then I thought it was because I upgraded to a Phenom II X6 1100T, then I thought it was memory issues, then I thought it was video driver issues, then audio drivers, then updates... Nothing I did, tweaked, wiped or replaced resolved the problem.

The aggravating part is I have a nearly identical (although quite a bit less powerful) PC with an AMD Phenom II x4 that FSX is running just fine on.

The ONLY and last thing that it could possibly be, for me, is that my gaming rig is running WinXP and the other PC is running Win7.

I have other flightsims and games that refuse to run properly, if at all, on my systems just because they were coded back in the days where they were graphics card specific (ie: 3DFX). Funny, I would've thought that when nVidia and 3DFX "merged" there would be some backwards compatibility...

So, once again, I feel your pain and frustration and I wish you luck. If you do get it to run, PLEASE enlighten me (us) with your "technique"!!

Create a new dummy account in Windows... install FSX as normal into the new account... can be safely and permenently deleted...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... interesting. Didn't try that... yet!

I might give that a try EMatheson! Smart idea.

Right now, I have a side job that is now behind on its deadline because of this fiasco.

By the way, on my rig, this is a fresh install of Windows XP 32. Brand new, a about 2 weeks old now, still finding things that need installing, like Skype.

I am faithful. It will happen.

Thanks gang for all the advice and input. Massively appreciated.

Khaos,

FSX, from what all I have learned, heard from high ups and pros, it was just not finished and it wasnt able to run fast because of programming. Its not designed to work on super computers, so in buying super computers, it still cannot handle superthreading (or what ever thats called) and 64bit systems. That is why people were spending $5,000.00 USD back when FSX came out, to run FSX with, and it still had frame rates of 20 to 30 FPS. Its the sim, not your computer. If Aces had the resources and time, it would have ran much better, in my humble opinion. Windows do not know how to manage a gaming studio, or at least FS.

I apologize if anything I am about to write is a repeat, but I recently had a similar problem...

My problem started when I used cc Cleaner to "fix" my registry. After that my system became unstable and I ended up reinstalling Windows XP (SP3). I have multiple drives on my rig and I keep my C: drive free of everything but system related files. That way, if I have to reinstall the OS, I won't loose much of my collected data.

Once I reinstalled, I tried to re-install FSX and the FS SP1. They completed, but the simulator would not run. In the end, I had to remove all traces of my original install manually, the uninstaller was not enough. I removed my \FSX folder where the game was installed and (as I had saved and re-copied) the Flight Simulator X folder(s) on my C: drive under My documents. There are also hidden FSX folders on the C: drive. If you have ever tried installing the SDK you would know about those as well. They are located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX.

If you remove all traces of your original FSX and then try to install from scratch (even try using an install folder name that you have never used in the past), you should be successful. If not, then I would expect that either your XP is missing some required files or your registry (even if new) is out of kilter from all the install/re-installs you've already done.
