• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Getting Airport Specs

There is this Midwest International airport that I have wanted to tackle for some time.

A question for all of the payware developers and anyone else in the know. Have you ever written to the Airport management to ask for a media kit that would have some detailed photos and perhaps measurements of the airport and buildings.

Sadly Google Earth doesn't show this airport with anything but an overview, no street view, no birds eye....NADA. So it is hard to get an idea using even the measure tool what the rough dimensions are.

I live about 10 miles from the field but have been hesitant due to TSA of strolling around with my camera taking pics and a notepad drawing rough outlines with estimated lengths and heights.

What would you do, who at the airfield would you get a hold of.

Thanks
Randy Smith

There should be a phone number for the airport. Call and ask for the airport manager.

Airport Manager for sure. What I've found is that they're all FASCINATED by the concept of scenery development, and every airport we've worked on, the airport manager has been kept in the loop with the project and is always pleased to see the finished product...

And you wouldn't believe how many are simmers themselves!!!

Absolutely agree with the guys. real nice letter (snail mail) email etc to open up the the conversation is frequently all that is required to get attention. Point out that you are makine or attempting to make a 3d version of the airport , why and it use. The latter is vital these days due to the security issue many AP's have had to install - I asked a while back to do heathrow ............................. A snowball had a better chance in hell. lol.

Make it clear that ANY security areas will be handled discreetly to the point of not actually reality used in the model. IT might be that they have an opportunity for you to go on a done day where traffic is limited and look around. IF not ask is you can photograph the areas required and work WITH security to ensure discretion. This shows you are being realistic and understanding their constrained. What's the worst that can happen - A solid No can do? If that the case than a simple thank you for the consideration response must be made by you - that can in effect actually open dialogue as well.

I contacted the security department at KCVG and they set up a tour for me so that I can see parts of the airport closed to the public. Well, closed it a relative term since ANYONE can request a tour. They usually do it only for groups but after telling them what I was working on they were happy to do it for me so I can get close up photos and building dimensions.
