• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Getting close!

Ok, I have it now where I can export an x-file and I have converted it to a .mdl using the XtoMdl tool. The SDK says now I drop it onto the BGL compiler to make an object to place in FS, but when I do, I get nothing. It also says to run open the compiler command prompt if nothing happens, but I'm not sure how to do so. I know how to open the Command Prompt Window, but from there I'm lost...

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Are you trying to amke a scenery object, or an airplane.

If an airplane - STOP, DO NOT GO PAST THAT POINT! Your mdl file is what you need. Now you need to create the aircraft's folder, panel, sound, *.air and the sundry config files.

If for a scenery object, then you need to create the XML placement file, and THAT's the file that you drag onto BGLComp to create your *.bgl file ....

I think the idea the SDK had was exporting the plane as a scenery opbject just for the purposes of checking things out. Personally, I'll just export it as a plane. Can I use another planes folder and just rename my mdl?

Ok, here we go! A whole new set of questions... :)

I took and replaced the Extra mdl with mine and here are the results. Now keep in mind, the plane is supposed to be sitting facing the opposite direction at the end of the taxiway I've highlighted. Also, some textures would be nice and I think I have a problem with the scale...

I gonna have to say yes on that scale problem... :D Moving the model closer to the origin in Max fixed the off-center problem.

Kevin - why does an image of the early Bill (Lionheart) come to mind?

Did you scale your model in max? i.e., what are your system units, (I'm assuming it's the same as in gmax - 1 unit = 1 meter). I'm also assuming that you modelled in, say feet (system units MUST be 1 unit=1 meter; modelling units can be feet, meters, cubits....) and properly scaled the model.

Actually, I modeled in generic units, then scaled it down. I think I have the size right about where it should be now...

When you look at your a/c in the Left Viewport, is the a/c facing to the left?

I think you need to rotate the entire a/c 180º! ;)

Now how on Earth could you have possibly known that?

The screenshot of the a/c parked "backwards" gave it away...

Besides, it is a very common mistake, as the stupid tutorial in the FS9 SDK has the modeler building the silly thing backwards... :banghead:

Top View: nose of a/c is at top of screen
Left View: nose of a/c is on the left side of screen
Right View: nose of a/c is on the right side of screen
Bottom View: nose of a/c is at the bottom of screen
Back View: looking towards the back of the a/c
Front View: looking towards the front of the a/c

Hey! Look at that! Ryan/KEVIN is in FS now!!!!

Brilliant!

Congrats man..

I like it Zeppelin sized personally. However, when it comes time to replace the tires, you will need to raise alot of funds.. Fuel as well.. eeks!
