• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I'm new to Flight Sim X and want to make scenery. I have a few questions..

1. What software do I need?
2. How do you do it? is there a good tutorial out there?

I have the latest Graphics making software out so shouldn't be a problem there and I have programed in VB.NET and PHP before so working my around new things should not be an issue.

Can you give us a bit more details about the sort of scenery you want to make? For example one or more of the following or something else?

  • Terrain - that is the shape of the land (Mesh) or the way it looks (land and water class)
  • Modification of facilities at existing airports such as runways, taxiways, parking and so on
  • Adding objects to existing scenery
  • Creating your own objects to use in scenery
  • Designing airport from scratch using 3D design tools

I'm looking at making some NZ and AU Scenery..

[*]Terrain -
Some of this, ie: Queenstown, West Auckland

[*]Modification of facilities at existing airports such as runways, taxiways, parking and so on
A little of this at some of the smaller airports around NZ.

[*]Adding objects to existing scenery
A fair bit of this. There are a lot of missing buildings around Auckland which I want to add... for example.

[*]Creating your own objects to use in scenery
Like above, some object which are not based at the airport i want to add. ie: Mt Smart Stadium.

[*]Designing airport from scratch using 3D design tools
All Airports I want to edit are already in Flight Sim X is just back to point 2.

For Terrain work check out SBuilderX (www.ptsim.com and go to forums. Download from AVSIM and maybe other sites) or FSX KML (Check out the forum here). Both are freeware

For airport design work there are three tools for FSX. AFX (payware from Flight1), FSX Planner or Airport Design Editor (both FSXP and ADE have forums here and both are freeware)

Placing objects can be done to some degree using several of the tools above but the main tools for in-sim object placement are Whisplacer (free) and Instant Scenery (payware from Flight1)

To build you own objects you need a 3D design tool such as Gmax (free) or FSDS (payware). There is also a relatively new tool called Instant Object Designer (I think) that allows users to create fairly simple objects from pictures. a Google (or Yahoo) search should find that. It is payware
