• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Getting started

Hi there, i've recently aqquired gmax which i'm going to use to produce some models for flight sim 9/x i've watched and read through a number of tutorials to get me started on this and i have a fair bit of experience in 3d modelling.

I'm not quite sure what model i wish to create, i'd like to start off with a simple modern jet fighter something like the BAe Hawk trainer jet. However i need to find some 3-view drawings to use as a reference. So far i have been unable to find a set of good drawings to work from. I was hoping somebody could either pull up an existing 3-view of that aircraft or a similar one to get me started with as i am not sure what to look for in a drawing or how detailed it needs to be.

Could somebody give me a few examples of what i should be looking for in a reference drawing to use as my front, top and side elevation view in gmax? or list me a few good sites which have a database of some description of useful drawings for this type of aircraft.

Thanks a lot

Ok so i got my design layed out and i got modelling the fuselage, i got it finished and had a good observation and i was wondering how good it is in terms of quality, it looks to me as though the face of the model has too little vertices and consequently is a little too sharp or is this normal at this stage? can this be fixed easily if so? or do i have to scrap it and start again?

Also, where shall i go from here? what part is best to start doing next? and do i create the new part in a new gmax doc and then import it in once it is done?

At this stage, before you start cutting canopies, etc., don't worry too much about ultra-precision. One of the good things about gmax is that you can go back and "add" complexity very easily ...

Ok then thanks, so if i was to go back and maybe give it some extra smoothness what is the best way to go about doing it?

also i'm thinking of doing the air inlets next, is that a good idea?

thanks

thanks a lot for the links, i'll certainly be using them for referencing, it's actually for my first model and first thing i've created using gmax so i appreciate the positive comment.

Got any suggestions as to what part to model next and any tips on doing so?

thanks again

Your question: What at next.

It is your own part what at next. I have never seen any rules.

Look two of my actual Projects in Gmax:

DH 100 Vampire *Swiss Air Force*
Dornier DO28-D *SKyservant*

My way is:
At first the Fuse and Windows or Canopy,
then Gears, then Wings + Rudder and so on.

ok thanks a lot and nice work. So has anybody got any suggestions about smoothing my fuselage, i'm not sure how to do it sorry, and do i make my inlets in this file or do i create a new document for the inlets and import them in?

thanks
