• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA gmax export problem

Hello,

I installed gmax 1.2 and copied FSX_GmaxGamePack in the proper location. I start gmax using the provided shortcut and I see save as MDL option in export dialog. But when I export as mdl I get the following error:
Code:
Failed to find FSX SDK installation path!
Both FSXA and SDK are installed in the default locations. I am using Windows 7 64 bit.

I tried using ConfigSDK.exe before copying FSX_GmaxGamePack, but it did not make any difference.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Look in your Registry for this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft Microsoft Games/Flight Simulator X SDK

make certain that the SdkRootDir is set to the correct path (mine is E:\FSX_SDK\SDK\)

and that the entry for the SetupPath is correct as well... (mine is E:\FSX_SDK\)

Thanks n4gix,

I did not have Microsoft Games/Flight Simulator X SDK entries at all. Adding them did not change anything though. Could you export this section and post it here? I assumed that SkdRootDir was misspelled. This is what I have:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator X SDK]
"SetupPath"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Games\\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\\"
"SdkRootDir"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Games\\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\\SDK\\"
I looked into gmax_FSModelExp.dle and I saw references to SetupPath but not to SdkRootDir.

Thanks.

The Registry entries are created automatically when the SDK (and updates) are installed.

Since you had no entries at all, that is a pretty reliable sign that the installation failed to complete properly.

Understand that the ConfigSDK.exe doesn't update the Registry, but instead adjusts the paths in the various MaxScripts, cfg, ini, and export .dle files.

I choose not to install the SDK into the default path under the "Program Files" banner, but instead use a far shorter and simpler path to a folder of my choosing, which allows me to set the Permissions and Security for the entire folder/subfolder structure for "Full..." :)

In my case, that path is E:\FSX_SDK\

At this point, I'd suggest a full reinstall of the SDK is called for, with a pause between steps to verify that the correct Registry entries are being created.

...and yes, that was a typo, which I've now corrected in my original post.

Thanks n4gix, I will try full reinstall. Can you still post your section of the registry?
Thanks.

It looks just like the one you posted, except with different paths of course... :teacher:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator X SDK]
"SetupPath"="E:\\FSX_SDK\\"
"SdkRootdir"="E:\\FSX_SDK\\SDK\\"
