• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Gmax lighting effects problem

I have tried to place red obstruction lights in my airport scenery by creating Gmax models and placing them using ADE, but even though I use the effect parameters in the attach point (day=0; night=1) the lights stay on during the day. Anyone have any thoughts on what I may be doing wrong?

I create a box, clone it, convert it to mesh, and attach the effect placing the above mentioned parameters where indicated. No joy.

Gmax light effects

I should have mentioned in my original post that my procedure in Gmax was as follows:

I created a box, cloned it twice, converted the cloned boxes to mesh, and used AttachPoint to attach the same effect to each. In one I entered the parameters "day=0;night=1" and in the other "dawn=1;dusk=1". I ran LOD name tool, exported the model to ADE, and placed the lights in the scenery. The lights show up all the time.

Perhaps I am missing something fundamental, but am not sure what. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here's the way I do it:

1/ Make the taxiway light model.

1/ Make a plane - place it discretely inside the top of the taxiway light as it will show in the Sim. Convert the plane to editable mesh.

2/ Clone the plane and move them apart slightly [easier to select afterward].

3/ Assign a texture to the two planes [same texture as the taxiway light].

4/ Select the first plane and run the 'AttachPoint Tool' from the FS Tools menu.

5/ Check the 'Effect' box and select the effect you wish to attach.

6/ In the 'Effect Params:' box type DAY=0;NIGHT=1

7/ Repeat steps 4 to 6 for the second plane, except you must type DAWN=1;DUSK=1 in the 'Effect Params:' box.

8/ Run the LODName tool as normal and export as normal.

The lighting effect in FSX is limited to two parameters [e.g. DAY=0;NIGHT=1] so we must have the two planes [the second one having DAWN=1;DUSK=1 parameter] for your effect to show in the Sim.

Make sure the effect parameters have a semicolon between each attribute or the effect won't work.

Hope I explained it ok...

*EDIT* Sorry, I missed your last post Mr Shad ;-)

Dave, thanks for the step-by-step. The only thing I don't do is texture the two additional planes before running AttachPoint tool. Would that possibly make the difference, I wonder?

Did you type exactly DAY=0;NIGHT=1 and DAWN=1;DUSK=1 for each of the parameters [i.e. without the "]?

Perhaps you can attach the Gmax file you made so I can take a look?

Regards, Dave.

Well, I'm not sure what did the trick, but it worked, finally. I'm not sure what I did differently that could have made it go, but I created the first plane, converted it to mesh, textured it, then cloned it twice. Used AttachPoint exactly as directed on both of the cloned planes. In the AttachPoint parameters, the only difference was I used all caps for them. I don't see why that would do it, but now everything works like it should. Go figure. Thanks for all the help!
