Just to report some gmax oddities. Perhaps its helpful, in the event that someone is trying to learn gmax and isn't aware of which results suggest user error and which results suggest Gmax "quirk".
1. On assigning uvw coordinates using uvwunwrap to a simple box, (after doing the same type of work for hours), on this one box, assigning a "planar map" to a side did not break the uvw vertices with the adjoining sides. I had to collapse the stack, and restart uvwunwrap before I could independently assign that sides uvw coordinates.
2. After created two small objects, I created a third...a primitive box. It was just to test the sizing of another object. When satisfied, I deleted that object. The other small objects also on the screen at the same time disappeared as well, as thou I'd "attached" the three objects (even thou I hadn't). I "undid" the delete and assured myself that the three objects had seperate names, and were not attached. Went ahead and re-did the delete, and once again all three object disappeared. I then zoomed the scale out to see the entire scene, and zoomed back in....the two previously invisible objects re-appeared.
Folks with a lot of experience won't find this too surprising, but when it happened I thought of some of the people posting here that are just learning Gmax. For them, perhaps its helpful to recognize that the proggy will mess with you a bit now and then.
Enjoy!
