• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Google Sketchup

I started using Gmax to create a building, but after 5 minutes, I knew it would take forever. I browsed around and found Google Sketchup.

SO MUCH EASIER! Is it possible for models in Google Sketchup to work in FS just as scenery? Will the models register in ADE's library? Does anybody even know?

You can only export to a format that gmax will import if you have sketchup pro ($)

When you import it to Gmax, you can export it to a mdl then add it to a library and place it inside FS.

Hi!

To the best of my knowledge that thread is dated March 2008... :D

Using the Pro-version I experimented with exporting untextured objects to Gmax quite a long time ago. Building in SketchUp is a breeze, but the work required to straighten all the chopped surfaces and collocated vertices made me build the object from scratch in Gmax anyway. Without the proper converter modeling directly SketchUp -> FS I would say it is worth the effort to learn Gmax instead. Unless...

I asked a well known creator of many planes such as all the Battle Star Galactica, carriers and other aircraft about this issue.

Delta Whiskey is his name and he replied that when you import from Sketchup to Gmax you have to flip the Poly's because they are backwards making them invisible. Once you flip them the textures can show.

I had a boat from Sketchup and once exported to 3ds format into gmax, and then exported to .mdl and imported into Library maker, exported to .bgl and loaded into ADE to be placed, when I opened up FSX I found the boat missing, but the engine, ducks, and shotgun were there!

too much work to fiddle around with for me.

All the faces need to be facing the user in Sketchup (white face vs purple face)

If you use groups in SU, then these will come through as different parts of the model. Its possible therefore, that a GUID was only given to one part of the model...and that is why the rest didnt show up

As in my experience, you still need knowledge of GMAX to be able to properly use models from SU anyway....so it is probably easier to just learn Gmax.

(in saying that I still use SU to do some basic modelling and then finish it in Gmax- I.e. texturing, complex shapes, LODs, optimising etc)

While most modellers probably use gmax/Max or FSDS for their modelling, I have no doubt that a few use a combination - preparing basic meshes in other programs and bring them into gmax/Max FSDS fro tweaking and compiling.

The end result is more the work of the artist involved than of any specific tool/program used.
