• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Ground polygon detail map...

Hi,

I'm new to scenery design, and I'm currently building a scenery of ENCN Kjevik in Norway using Lightwave.

So far I have only run in to one issue I really don't know how to solve...

On the airport background polygons(made using the 2002 sdk), I would really like to add the same detail multi texturing as on the default grass surface. Is this possible?

I would guess that using multitexturing is much more FPS friendly than diffrent layered objects with transparency?

Thank you,
Jon Michael

Hi Jon,

That kind of feature is not supported by the FS2002 gamepack, actually it was only added in FSX for 3D models. The terrain engine internally also use a noise texture (I guess that is what you call the detail texture), but that can't be used on custom ground polygons made with the FS2002 SDK.

So I think you will have to make an additional layer if you want to achieve a similar effect. I have done that before in projects I worked on as well.

Thanks, another problem with the fs2002 sdk seems to be function to add the "plattform" command. Any solution to this?

Hi,

There is no platform function in the FS2002 SDK, that was only added in the FS2004 SDK. But when making ground polygons you don't need a platform either, because they are on the ground already.

The ground polygons made with the FS2002 gamepack are supposed to be used on ground that has been flattened first.

Are the hills you mention part of the terrain mesh or did you make them in GMax? In the last case I would use the FS2004 gamepack for the hill (it is a 3D object, not a ground polygon in that case).

I see. So what are the main advantages to using the fs2002 sdk? I thought it had something to do with shadows and correct layering of objects?

Btw: Thank you for very informative answers.

Hi,

The problem is that with the FS2004 GMax only MDL files can be made and these don't work good for ground polygons. They flicker and don't display shadows on them. This is because the code is optimized for 3D objects, not for ground polygons.

When using the FS2002 gamepack you can tweakt the output to overcome these problems and behave like real ground polygons.

These ground polygon issues only appear when you place flat polygons on the mesh terrain. For making a helipad or other 3D object you can land/drive on using the FS2004 gamepack is fine. With a platform you can make the surface hard and in that case it also displays shadows. And because the polygons are not on the ground, but above it they will not flicker either.
