• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Ground Polys

I have read the tutorial by Bill Womack on making the ground polys, yet I do not use the FS8SDK. I also read that this section is now obsolete. So how indeed does one assign a level to the different layers, and what's the best way of putting this into the sim with the scenery package?

Kind regards,

Shaun.

So what? you create each layer as a separate plane in the beginning... export it as .mdl and use model converter to merge the planes together?

Hi,

No need to make them in different mdl files. You can just put all your ground polygons in one file. Based on the texture name you can then assign a layer number in the ground polygon wizard of modelconverterx. It will then produce the fs2002 style bgl file for you.

I have an issue: I have used the satellite image to make the ground polys but they are off by quite a margin. Even when I have used coordinate converter to set the position of each of the corners it it still a long way from lining up with the taxi ways.

What am I doing wrong?

Did you use the right coordinates for the reference point?

And how did you put the imagery in FS that you use as a reference?

I used photoscenery maker and calibrated it using 2 coordinates to generate the .inf, which lined it up pretty much perfectly. I think I might have to put it in in smaller squares in GMAX, instead of one big picture for the whole area.

Hi,

Big or small tiles should not matter.

Do they have an offset in position or in rotation?

Nope. What is the best way you can put the image in as photo scenery? It's odd In ADE the airport almost perfectly lined up with it in FSX.
In GMAX it's so far off that it's not even funny.
I import the picture on a plane with length/width as in pixels of the image to make sure it's proportion is right, then scale the image to fit the runway that is the right dimensions. But in FSX the taxiways I have built are a long way off.

And how did you determines the coordinates of the reference point in gmax? Did you use some known position like the runway for that as well?

I used the centre coordinates of the file as found on Google Earth.... don't worry now; I have it lined up well enough. Thanks for your help.

I just need to get a good asphalt texture as the ones I have show a horrible tiling and are not wide enough.

Ground Poly Wizard

I have a little problem with the Ground Poly Wizard, Arno.

I have prepared the .asm file with GMax fs2002 gamepack, applied the necessary .asm tweak and compiled with BGLC_9. The poly displays properly in FS9 but flickers in FSX (presumably due to curved earth - its over 1000m. per side).

So, I call on MCX to carve the poly up into 100m squares. MCX produces the new file without error. MCX recognizes the lat/lon/elev from the input .bgl file. I only asked it yo split at 100m boundaries. But, nothing is displayed in either FS9 or FSX.

Am I asking MCX to do something it's not intended to do?

I've sent you the input file via e-mail.
