• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

GWX(Get Windows X)

Late Tues. evening I remembered that it was patch Tuesday so I dutifully downloaded 10 important and 8 optional patches. Wed. morning I was greeted with a new notification icon about getting Windows 10. Since I don't intend on getting Windows 10 anytime soon I went into the event manager and set it to hide GWX notifications. This morning when I turned on my computer the GWX notification was back. My event manager setting had been summarily changed by MS. As far as they are concerned I'm going to have that notification present whether I want it or not. So I found this web page http://greatis.com/blog/what-is-gwx-gwx-exe and removed KB3035583(not that it was easy to find). Hopefully the next time I start my computer the GWX notification is gone. Thanks for reading my rant.

That might work, let us know.

A side note: are you on Windows 8.1? If so, I suggest upgrade to Windows 10 when it comes out or shortly after. There's a known bug on Windows 8.1 which disconnects the joystick in the sim as soon as you go to another window (and sometimes randomly). It is so annoying, and I have heard that the beta testers of Windows 10 have not noticed any problems in the flight simulator related to that.

And if you are not on Windows 8.1 well, just ignore that last paragraph ;)

Windows 10 beta user here. Definitely upgrade from 8.1 when you get the chance, not only are the controller issues no longer present, but I've noticed a marked increase in performance on the new OS (I'd say it's a solid 10-15% gain).

if you open up the toolbar properties, hit hide toolbar automatically the controller works again.

and you'll always notice a performance gain on a fresh OS. Saying that I'll get it when it's out probs.

I have my toolbar set to automatically hide. Should I only set it to hide when my joystick drops?

An update. First I'm using Win 7 64 bit not Win 8. Of the nine updates listed I had 5 on my system. One of them is listed as an important update. The others as optional. They are all gone with no problem connecting to updates. I have rebooted and the GWX icon did not show up. I don't wear a tinfoil hat but I do think that MS was wrong to turn on the GWX icon when I had turned it off. I have seen articles on the web that stated MS was going to change the business model with Windows. They are going to give Win 7 and 8 users Win 10 and try to sell features after the fact. I'm concerned about two aspects. One is that the free version of Win 10 will not be as functional as Win 7 and I won't be able to uninstall Win 10. Second is that there will be no end of annoying buttons and popups when they are trying to sell me more features. I would prefer to buy an upgrade when it's convenient to me.

Ed, you'll have a year in which you can move to WX for free, after which you pay for the privilege. Where did the idea that WX will be crippleware come from? If you have W7 Home Premium you'll get the cooking version, Ultimate/Pro users get Professional. IF you let the upgrade go ahead.

No-one is twisting your arm.

Thanks for the info Tom, also thanks for the link to SOH. Glad to get less than useful updates off of my computer. It's been weeks since I saw a story about why they were giving a free upgrade to WX. This story explained that MS. wasn't just being generous. MS. was going to make money selling features. The idea of crippleware is mine based on what I thought they would need to incentivize me to make purchases of features. My thinking is that they are trying to make more revenue selling features for WX than just selling me an upgrade to WX and in order to do that the features would have to be desirable. As to the arm twisting I don't need to have an icon appearing constantly(even if it's a small one) reminding me of this offer. So I turned it off. Why couldn't they leave it off? They wrote the code that would check to see if it's off and turn it back on. In my mind that's unnecessary and very annoying to me as a potential customer.

its the toggling between the modes which does it.

in windowed mode turn it off, then it should work again. You can minimise fsx and turn it back on. Doing so without minimising will disable the joystick again. Sometimes takes a couple of goes. Win 8 has issues!

A nuisance indeed. I will have to test that! Thanks

I run W7P and have never received a notification of any sort about W10. I am also running W10 beta on a second computer and while it still has some minor problems all notifications are on a special menu that only shows up if you open it. There is a small icon that appears in the task bar that lets you know that there are new notifications available but that's it, no disruptions and no popups.

Thanks for the info Paul. What happens if you turn that notification icon off in W10? Does it turn itself right back on the next time you start W10? Try it and let me know the result. Thanks.

Ed

The notification icon resides in the hidden icons tray similar to the little flag windows uses to notify a system problem. Once you open the notification menu for review it disappears until a new notification appears. It is very noninvasive. Since I am running a beta I check this on a regular basis looking for the newest updates. The only (what you might call an add) was an invitation to download a free trial of the latest version of Microsoft Office but I would not of seen this if I had not been checking for updates.
