• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hardware Integration Possibilities

Hello,

I am new on this community. I live in Brazil and the reason for my contact is that I am planning my Master course project.
There is a research project building a hex copter and they invited me to join in the next project phase when they want to perform flight control using ARM micro controllers.

As I always want to test things before putting them to run, I think using a simulation system would be a great start.

I know Microsoft Flight Simulator since I was a kid, but now I discovered its extensibility potential, no this is very new to me. The Microsoft ESP project is also something very new.

I would like to know if it is possible to simulate my flight control system (running on my micro controller) using the Microsoft Flight Simulator as an input/output system.

As far as I read, I think the answer is yes, but I could not find any article or paper about this.

I would appreciate if you could give me some tips about this hardware integration possibilities.

Thank you,

I don't think your problem would be the interface. The problem is neither FSX or ESP simulates the flight model of a "hex copter". And I don't think you could build a hex copter object yourself for FSX, because the flight dynamics are very different than the normal helicopter model which expects a tail rotor and adjustable-pitch rotor blades.

And especially if you mean a very small hex copter like http://www.ardrone2.com , the aerodynamics are very different than a large helicopter that carries people. FSX just wasn't made to simulate something that small.

The only way to do such a thing is to take control of the velocities of the aircraft entirely via simconnect with your own physics engine.

Use Xplane for your project. it can be used to generate the model and simulate that aircraft no problem.

I am assuming that you have no built the simulator flight model yet? If you have, it will probably need to be either redone in xplane>planemaker or imported.

There is a project already in xplane that may be similar to yours...its called the verticopter. do a google search on it and you will find a lot of information about it.

There are also some very good utube videos on modelling for xplane... do a search on utube for the verticopter...this author is fantastic i found his video tutorials very helpful and extensive.
