• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I am just getting started in scenery design and would like to hear suggestions
of which programs to use to get started. It looks to be something I would like to do. I have dabbled with Gmax some but not enough to really mention although it looks like a good program and I have read many posts on it. I also have EOD and just started with it doing a couple tutorials to see what it can do. So really I think I need some basics to start with. I have a few programs already on my pc. I see you have some tutorials in here to use, so some basic direction would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Edge:

I highly recommend the Beginner's Guide to Scenery Design

This dynamic document is a collaborative effort of the members of the AvSim Scenery Design forum:

Scenery design for Microsoft Flight Simulator can seem complex, even bewildering, to beginners. Concepts and terms are vaguely understood, if at all, and it is difficult to choose the right tools for each task. This comprehensive (.html) document seeks to provide some guidance for those who are starting out.

This is a "must-read" for anyone interested in scenery design, the single most comprehensive guide of its type today!

You can either read the document on line at the "MSFS Scenery Design Forum" at http://avsim.com/

-or-

Download a *.html or *.pdf version in the tutorial section of the SHOF http://www.scenery.org/tutorials.htm

Good Luck

Hi Larry,

First welcome to the forums :D.

The FAQ on the AvSim forum, as suggested by Tom, is indeed a good place to start. But it might also help if you tell us what you would like to change/add to the scenery. In general there is not one perfect tool, so for specific tasks there are different tools.

Ok. Thanks for the information.
Arno. My project right now is to put together some added objects such as a hanger and the miscellaneous objects for that and an animated jetway specific to the Virtual Airline I belong too. I have RWY 12 and some of the objects are ok to use, such as a hanger, but , at this point the number of objects is limited, in my view, although new ones come online, and, RWY 12
is a little finicky. For instance, I placed an object and did not like it, and now
I cannot remove it, even by deleting the files.
So, at this point what I think I want to do is design a building like an airport office, rural and some goodies with it. I am probably not being specific enough
because there are so many things I would like to do. Terrain, Landclass, and Mesh I am not interested in at this point.
Take a look at this persons work at Tortola, BVI, an airport scenery. i have been there and he did a great job in putting together what it actually looks like. The file is called, Tortola.zip. I think I got it from Avsim.
Thanks to both of you for your recommendations.

Removing the BGL file created by Rwy12 should always remove the object as well.

In that case I would advice giving GMax a try. You could then make your own library of objects and place them again with Rwy12. If you want to make a detailed airport it is indeed almost always needed to create custom buildings.
