• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

After finishing - sort of - my FLAK bunker, I figured I might try my hand at something a tad more challenging: a 1938 Fiat Topolino.

I loaded 3 images into Sketchup, as flat pictures..... started a new layer and traced the lines on the pictures, making sure all straight and curved line ends show the green dot when connecting, and making sure (I think) that all lines are in the same plane, i.e. on surface on the image behind them.

Alas..... it works for the top view, where my contours ultimately forms a 'face' that I can pull up.

Not so on the side view..... I simply cannot get it to be a 'face'. I drew some lines, interconnecting the contour lines green points..... and after drawing a lot of these diagonal lines I ultimately get lots of triangular-ish faces.

But nothing like the top-down view.

I even used a plugin called 'Stray Lines' to find problems, but it doesn't see any.

What on earth am I doing wrong that works on the top down view and not on the vertical side view !? Driving me mad !

This is typically caused by some of the points not being on the face, and the fact the face is ultimately created when adding diagonal lines, supports this.

I've had the same problem when I've tried to create models based this way.
If you can't find any points which aren't on the intended face, then I can have a look at it if you upload your model.

Hej Morton, thanks for the quick reply. I figure that must be the issue..... but how do you see it? I tried looking from the side (I noticed some 'warped' lines in my first attempt and started anew), but it is impossible to see if all points also touch the image. Is there a plugin or trick for it?

Thanks Morton, that worked ! Still unsure why it works fine with the picture flat on the floor so to speak, but not when I set it up vertically. For some reason the draw on face doesn't work when I do that.....

Oh well..... another nagging problem solved thanks to the wonderful community :-)

Hi Gary, yes I saw that and have Workplane installed.

I'll check on the silhouette though, didn't see that one yet. But I got me a 3D half Fiat already, so I am making progress..... Too bad we have to go to France for a few weeks now...... can't take the design PC with me this time :-(

Hmmm... that's a good problem; how about "I" go to France ...for you ? :D

PS: Sketchup actually works OK on a less powerful PC notebook or desktop; but < ahem, cough-cough > ...skiing 'might' be fun too ! ;)

I know, but I miss my screen real estate on a notebook....... I'll be taking Photoshop tutorials with me instead ;-)

my 15 min working on the same car. plugins are nice but its not impossible to do without them.
create clean objects to avoid stray issues later on in the model.

I think i might finish it to use in scenery as well. i need frf vehicles but didnt really want to make them myself.
