• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Help: My Land Class has gone on strike!

Well somehow, some way, I have managed to nullify all of my FS9 addon land class scenery files. These files reside in the FS9/Scenery/Base/Scenery folder along with the default files that are already in there. Up to this point, I have not had an issue with placing land class files in that location and have added 20+ land class files to that folder without a problem.

But now all of a sudden all of my land class mods are not showing in game.

I know that the files themselves are not corrupt, I took them out of that default folder, created a new addon scenery folder in the FS9/Addon Scenery location, activated it and they show up in game, so I know that the files themselves actually work. However when they reside in that FS9/Scenery/Base/Scenery folder, they do not work.

I have tried many things over the last day trying to sort out the cause. I have stripped any files that I've added to my FS9 folder over the last couple of weeks. Still no joy.

But here's a theory I'm working on and it has to do with SBuilder for FS9.

Using the most up to date version, I have been adding scenery over a large area, I mean a HUGE area the size of an entire state (in the U.S.). In doing so I have added many custom textured VTP polygons to my single SBuilder file. The whole thing continues to compile without any issues.

However, in the past I have seen instances where certain scenery objects disappear and it seems to be related to using a single SBuilder file to create scenery over a large area. Now I can't confirm that but it is a hunch that I have. Maybe Luis will pop in and confirm/deny this theory of mine.

The last thing I know to try at this point is to go into SBuilder, and remove most of these VTP polygons that are spread out over this large area, recompile the VTTP file and see what happens. Mind you right now, that file and its associated scenery isn't even installed in my FS9 folder. But I've seen weird things happen in the past.

The good news is that I've got an easy work around but as a developer who has used that FS9/Scenery/Base/Scenery folder consistently for land class files, I don't want to have to switch now because that could result in confusion on the part of the users.

So I'm off to try this last little trick. If this doesn't work, I'm at a loss for what else to try.

Anyone have any thoughts?

One more thing, I know that using AFCAD, there is a limit to the number of polygons you can create (256 I think?). After that, other polygons start not showing up in game which is strangely similar to what's going on in my case. I'm wondering if this is what might be happening with SBuilder and all those VTP polys??

Hmmm.....seems the forum crash lost all of the responses to this post.

What I've learned since this post:

Putting land class add on files in the FS9/Scenery/World/Scenery folder IS NOT a good idea. FS9 uses an unverified system, possibly alphanumerical, to establish priority for the 9 default files in that folder already. Adding any new files to that folder MAY be altering that priority system with undetermined/unverified effects in game to addon and default land class textures. Better to create a new addon scenery custom folder with only a "scenery" sub folder, no "texture" sub folder as that will eventually lead to a hard CTD due to a known memory leak issue in FS9.

From Luis Sa's response to my initial post:

Using Sbuilder, it is better to break large numbers of custom ground texture polygons up into separate BGL files. I broke an initial file of 99 polygons up into 5 smaller files, all seems to be well now.
