• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Help with ground scenery

Dear flightsim friends,
my name is Viktor Schacht, I have been developing FS stuff for quite a while now but this is my first post in this nice forum.

For now I have only released two freeware airports (EDFM - Mannheim and EDRM - Mont Royal). But that's already some time ago. They were based on those FS2000 style ground polygons and custom APIs. Since then I haven't been working much on sceneries. Now I'd like to get started again.

I like the style of FlyTampa and FlightScenery very much and I'd like to reproduce one or two regional airports in a similar way. I think, I'm not bad at designing 3D objects and painting textures. You can take a look at a soviet terminal + tower, that I have been working on recently, here: http://www.djvitorio.com/pics/UHPK_pre3.jpg

However, I know how long it takes to get into new areas of FS design. And I don't want to spend too much time on learning all those "new" techniques of designing scenery ground polygons. I'd rather spend that time with nice looking buildings. :)

Ok, let's get to the point. :D Is there anyone out there who would like to help me with the ground scenery?
I will supply you with high res satellite pictures and I can also do the painting if needed. But I really need someone who is able to do the basic set up.

The sceneries I'd like to create are quite interesting.
UHPK Ust-Kamchatsk (peninsula of Kamtshatka, Russia) is a small regional airport in the far east. It's north of UHPP, there's not even a scenery of it in default FS.
Here you have a very interesting landscape. The pacific ocean, vulcanoes, beautiful mountains, lakes and rivers. It's similar to Alaska...
The airport is very old and dirty. I'd like to recreate this look.

The other one would be EDFM - Mannheim v.2. It's in the Rhein / Main Area (Germany), not far away from Frankfurt. This little airport is surrounded by the city of Mannheim on one side, highways on two sides and a river on the other side.
Here we have a lot of GA but also some biz jets and a regional airline (Cirrus Airlines). A very nice place with a lot of grass and a very nice modern terminal + tower. :)

Okey, maybe someone would like to help. That would be great.
I also hope that it's ok to post this kind of threads here, as it's a forum for developement problems. If not, please let me know. :)

best regards,

Viktor

I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to take some work over... BUT:

If you just would like to create high-res photo textures for your airport it shouldn't be the problem ;)

You just need the FS2002-gamepack installed with gmax. Then place one or more polygons and assign the ground texture. Export with keep=1 to get the asm-file and tweak it as mentioned in the wiki for ground polygons.

That should be everything you needed, as long as you don't want to fit the photo-texture to the mesh...

I have placed some test sceneries by this way with very good result, but I always miss free satellite photos

Thank you Simon!

So it looks like I have to do it myself...
Ok, I'll give it a try.

greetings,

Viktor

It is much more satisfying if you can do it yourself :)

Of course it is. But it also takes me weeks until I get the results I want.
That's basically my problem. I don't want to spend weeks again on reading, trying and bugging people in forums...
Like this, my sceneries will never be released. :(

Greetings,

Viktor

Hey guys!
Now I am trying to create ground polygons with FSDS since I'm familiar with the program. I've read thousands of threads telling me to manipulate the asm files. My problem is... Makemdl seems to delete them after creating the bgl. Everyone says I have to use the setting "keep files". I can't find it though... can anyone help?

Greetings,

Viktor

hi Victor,

I am not at my private computer right now, but as far as I remember it is a line in one of the gmax ini files. Adding the line "keep files=1" or similar will do it. But i think this is described in details in the wiki-section of this forum. If you are using skype you may contact me during the late afternoon hours. my skype name is oe-bdu.

Got it now! it was because of my old MakeMdl Version. Haha, expect some breath taking ground scenery! :D

Greetings,

Viktor

Hi Victor,

FSDS3 uses the MakeMDL of Fs2004, while to be able to make the ground scenery tweaks you need the Fs2002 MakeMDL. So I am not 100% sure if that is going to work, although you can always try of course :).

Hi guys!
I'd like to thank you for the help... with two screenshots.
Work in progress. (Default stuff not yet excluded) :)

Viktor
