• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

How do I create curved buildings?

I recently purchased FSDS v3 and I am attempting to recreate the terminal buildings for Philadelphia (KPHL) to make them look more accurate. The F terminal for the regional aircraft is slightly bent (i.e. not a square shape). Does anyone know how to create a rectanglular box that is slightly bent? I know how to create a simple box and apply the textures per the tutorial, but it isn't going so well on the bent terminal building. I attempted to create it by extruding a shape I created manually but it isn't very eye appealing (and the textures didn't show so well). Does anyone have the knowledge to create a box shape and "bend" it to make all sides uniform distances? Does FSDS even allow for that? Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Eric,

I'm not very good at FSDS, but I remember one of my friends telling me that most of his curved objects almost always start as cylinders.

By the way, a few friends of mine and I are already working on a PHL scenery (don't want to discourage you, but I hate seeing two developers work on the same thing at once!).

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks Dan. Most likely they will do a better job than I will since I am just starting out. My main goal was to have something to start with. I didn't realize how difficult the curved building thing would be. I have plenty of projects I would like to work on in other areas. I live in Colorado Springs so I can add things like the Air Force Academy and the surrounding airports which FS didn't put in.

Might want to head over the ProjectAI forums and talk to David Strate then. He's making a COS scenery I believe. :D

One way to consider making a curver building is to create a tube with 4 points and as many sections as you see fit. Hilight the points of the sections you want to move and use the rotate tool to make your curve.

There is an excellent tutorial at www.daviator.com in the tutorial section called bendnig a tube. This might give you some pointers as well as what I mentioned above.

How do I create curved buildings

Eric,

One way to create a curved front to a buildng is. as you said, using the template mode. I created one using a grid of 1/2 foot. From the top view, I placed the template points in a tight semi-circle, extruded the template the prefered height and then applied pologon smoothing. I then textured the front with a store front texture and it looked pretty good.

I ran into some curved roof sections on a building I was doing. The way I handled them was to use a tube with 4 sections. Delete the extra points on each of the sections, then select the points in the end section. Drag it down to the section, then scale the radius down as required to make the end. Do the same with the second to last section, then drag the points from the last section up to meet the first one.
