• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.

How to georeference an image?

Hi,

I have some Imagery that I have purchased for some UK locations.
The imagery came as a .jpg with a .wld file... I understand a .wld file is a "ESRI World" file and contains very basic georeferencing information.

So, is there a tool out there I can use to turn my JPG into a tif? Or have I wasted nearly £1000 on imagery I will never be able to get geo-referenced?

Did you try to load the file in your GIS tool? Might be the world file is automatically detected. If you bought the data, it should come properly geo referenced, else I would go back to the vendor.

I'm using QGis and currently see no way to import the .wld file.. or no way to link it to the image. Drag and drop doesn't work either so I'm stumped. My vendor can't really help as I specified that I wanted a JPG instead of Tif... something I highly regret now

Gdal should be able to read the wld file from what I read. If you do gdalinfo on the file, does it show extends?

You might want to try to rename the wld to jpw to see if it detects it.

Sorry, Arno I'm a complete newbie when it comes to using this software and only did use it to convert imagery to WGS84.

My .wld file has this text: "
0.1250000000
0.0000000000
0.0000000000
-0.1250000000
464394.4375000000
302397.4375000000
"

It is apparently a 12.5cm/pixel sat image on a JPG 18139x14431 pixels and 22.2mb in size

You should be able to drag'n'drop the image into QGIS. You will have to set the CRS of QGIS to see it properly before you drop it into QGIS. You can then save it as a GeoTiff with the wgs84 CRS. CRS is the projection.

I done it in the end using ArcGIS. I geo-referenced my image using ground control points....dare I say i got a perfect alignment. However, I still had to open my geo-refernced tiff inside Global Mapper and had to reproject using the Geographical lat/lon and WGS84. Looks amazing in FSX, very sharp/

Still very weird that you manually have to geo reference it if you bought it for so much money.

I just lack any experience with .wld files as I have always purchased a .tiff file and only had to re-project it to suit FS. This time I purchased JPEG format so it was a square and not stretched/distorted.
I got it from my local imagery provider https://www.bluesky-world.com/

The format shouldn't matter for square or distorted, that's possible with both. Since jog can loose quality due to compression I would always go for geotiff.
