• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 I am looking for Holgar Sandman's terrain mesh for the Columbia Gorge

Hi Bob:

IiRC, that terrain mesh add-on was for FS2004, and would not have exceeded LOD-9, but at the time it was made with older data, it may not have been higher resolution than LOD-7 or LOD-8.

If you are wanting to update terrain mesh for P3DV4, FreeMeshX may be preferable at LOD-10 (38.2 Meter or 1/3 Arc-Second between elevation data points).

However, there may only slightly more details seen, as default FSX and P3Dv1->v4 versions already had FSX - ESP terrain mesh BGLs.

Open these in SDK TMFViewer to see coverage areas at LOD-5 quad each:

[Prepar3D_v4 install path]\Scenery\0102\scenery\dem0102.bgl

[Prepar3D_v4 install path]\Scenery\0202\scenery\dem0202.bgl

If there is a specific scenery area that you wanted to enhance, USGS now has seamless 10 Meter DEM data for CONUS (or higher in areas).

One could make new terrain mesh to upgrade FSX / P3D with some study and a lot of source data, that is reduced by 40 % after compiled.

Gary- Thank you for your advice. I got that large global terrain mesh, but there were no instructions on where to install it. This is what I did so far...

1. After unzipping, I found the bgl's pertaining to each area of the globe including the patch bgl.
2. I put all into addonscenery.
3 I then activated each and adjusted the order so Patch is on top, then Pacific Northwest, then the others.
I wonder if this were the proper procedure. If not, you might be able to tell me the right procedure or guide to where I can find out. So far, I find nothing about procedure in the website. Bob

I think I did it right this time. I reversed all I did, Put all the regional folder into p3d main page, then added area compiled. It's looking better I think. need for flying about, but my older video card takes a small bit of time to update as a fly by. Before this install it didn't do that. This tells me something is different. haha
