• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I need some guidance

I am new to all of this so I ask questions so that I do not have to reinvent the wheel.

I have but one project and doubt if I live long enough to finish it. :) :censored:

I am tweeking Golden Wings/Silver Wings to resemble what I remember what the world was like up to 1960. For those of you who are old enought to remember there were still a lot of left over airpiorts, buildings and aircraft from as far back as the 20's. For me it was the true golden age of aviation when you could still fly VFR without radios. I remembrer waiting at the end of the runway for a green light from the tower. ( something I am going to try to duplicate. )

Right now I want to add location names to the roofs of hangars and buildings. Very important stuff when IFR ment follow the RR, River, and Road, and your chart was a roadmap.

I am looking for a way to change the texture file on specific buildings without having to do a complete rebuild.

Is it possible to decompile a building, change the texture, and recomplie it.

I am assuming that it would be easier to exclude an autogen object and replace it with a library object than replace it with a new autogen object.

I will greatly appreciate any and all advice that this group can give me. I promise that keeping with the tradition of this group I will share my work and files with all as freeware. I am going on 71 and just don't need the money.

Thanks,

Dale (DoubleBounce) Evans

I love FS, it allows me to fly with a physical. :p to the FAA

Hi Dale,

You can alter the textures of an object, without having to decompile/recompile it again. All you have to do is load the texture in a painting program and add the changes to it you want.

But of course changing a texture will affect all objects that use it. So for default objects that might mean that multiple objects are affected by your change. If you only want to change a single copy, you will have to create a new object that you can use instead.

Can you?

Arno,

Is it possible to clone the object and save it with another name?
Just being lazy and trying to advoid making a building from scratch.:D

Hi Dale,

If you are using Fs2004 that is slightly easier than for FsX. But still saving the MDL with a different name and then using that, will not solve your texture problem. For that you would also have to change the texture references inside the MDL. That is possible with some tweaking, but it is not really easy.

Adding name signs to buildings/objects

Hi, Dale

It occurred to be that some of your buildings/objects might be generic. I mean, they may be objects that are repeated many times around the FS world. In that case editing the texture may not be practical. Finding some textures can also be tricky. And there is also the possibility that the texture is so small that editing becomes impossible, unless you enlarge it to accommodate lettering.

But whatever the case, have you considered just making the signs with the names? Those are relatively easy to make, you can make them with gmax/ObPlacer or even EOD/FSSC, use DXT1 with alpha transparency for the bitmap texture, and apply them to any building, water tower, etc.

Would you be interested in doing that?
