'Is it a valid Flight Simulator '.X' file' Export Error

I'm getting the attached error message when I try and export certain models, any idea what's causing it?
I'm opening them in MCX to add P3D4 materials, however I get the error message even if I just open a model to re-export it.
It's always the same models that crash and it doesn't seem to matter which exporter I try, FSX, P3D2 or P3D4. I get the same error message if I keep the x file and try running it through XtoMDL separately.
I've compared the x file to one that does work for the internal model and I can't see any obvious differences, but I'm not totally sure what I'm looking at!
I can attach the x file if that's of any use?

Any weird characters in the texture file names or model name?

The only non letter or number characters are underscores ( _ ) and they're all on textures in the internal model which works fine.

That sounds OK. Any attachpoints with weird names?

Again, only letters numbers and _. The odd thing is the x file from 3DS compiles fine, it's only when I try and re-export the MDL from MCX.
It may be relevant that MCX throws a 'need to set diffuse texture first' error trying to open the original x file, but it does that with files it doesn't have a problem with the MDL of.
