• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Makemdl switching 2004 to 2002 in GMAX

Guys , is there any way to switch from 2004 to 2002?
currently im using 2004 wanted to switch to 2002 for ground poly's .
how do i switch it temporarily? or can i have both makemdl versions at the same time?

Hi,

It is possible, but to make it work as intended you need some file (acording to information somewhere at this forum) from the 2002 Pro CD. As I have never owned 2002, pro or otherwise, I got the idea to use a x-file as an intermediary. To use this method you need the 2002 "makemdl.exe" from MS and the utility "mdlcommander" (AvSim). (Save the makemdl.exe under a different name to make sure that gmax makes no mistake when exporting in the normal way through the 2004-makemdl).

Following the instruction in the mdlcommander readme you export the groundpoly as an x-file. And then you re-export it with 2002-makemdl (as a stand-alone app., just click on it), entering the co-ordinates for placement (that's how the 2002 works).

I've installed both SDK, so I can choose one of them if I wanna export a ground poly or make an object

ok , i got the file
i install it accordingly
C:\gmax\plugin .
it seems that it still uses the 2004 makemdl
when i export it .
how do i let it use the 2002 makemdl?

Hi,

Mdlcommander should be in "..\gmax\gamepacks\fs2004\plugins". And you should rename it and the original "makemdl.exe" and "makemdl.parts.xml" as per instruction in the readme. You make a small file called "[your project].par" as per instruction in the readme and put it in the folder where your exported files land. When you export you choose "keep files". You then end up with an .x-file of your project.

The 2002-makemdl may be anywhere (I put it in ""..\gmax\gamepacks\fs2004" but have it renamed so not to confuse gmax). When I use it I click on it and browse to the .x-file. It then works like the 2004-makemdl but your must fill in the coordinates.

Peter

ok.. i did as what you said ..
i have an error of makemdl is not found or failed to convert .
how many files are supposed to be in my gamepack\fs2004\plugins ?and what are the files?

hey peter
thanks for the info.
btw ... it doesnt seem to work on makemdl 2002 , the mdlcommander seems to work well on the makemdl 2004 :/

Hi Jouvarn,

MdlCommander should not (in my setup) be involved with the 2002 makemdl. You start out with a normal 2004 gamepack setup, change it to involve MdlCommander, and export as an .x-file.

Given the .x-file you simply use the 2002-makemdl.ex as a stand alone application to open that file.

Btw: My experience shows me that if you have both makemdl.exe's installed in my way, gmax may be confused and be unable to indentify the proper one (that is the 2004 makemdl.exe). This may result in the error message that you reported. That is reason I suggest the renaming of the 2002 makemdl. I call it makemdl02.exe, but you may choose whatever you like. As said, it is used as a stand alone app.

(And please remember that what I suggest is a work-around. If you can lay your hand on the 2002 pro CD, you should install the 2002 gamepack in the normal way, and then the 2004 one as per instruction to make the two work together in the official way).

Peter

You don't need MDLCommander. The instructions on how to use both gamepacks together come with the Fs2004 SDK. It is a nice little texture document (I think it is in the gamepacks\fs2004 folder by default or so).

Basically what you have to do is to create a gamepacks\fs2002 folder as well and copy a few files and folders in there. After that you create an additional shortcut. Then you have a shortcut for Fs2002 and one for Fs2004.

Easiest is probably to copy your Fs2004 shortcut and change it so that it refers to the new folder for Fs2002.

Hi Arno and Jouvarn,

Just to make clear that my contribution to this thread (the work-around using MdlCommander to produce an x-file) was based on the assumption that the original poster (Jourvarn) did not possess FS 2002 (Pro) and therefore had no legal access to the 2002-"FSModelExp.dle", which in another thread was stated as needed to make the 2002 gamepack work. This was based on the wording: switch from 2004 to 2002.

If I am wrong, please disregard my posts.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the clarification. As it was a rather long discussion I did not read all in great detail, so I might have missed that point. If you don't have access to Fs2002 Pro, I guess you are right (I never tried that myself). I am not even sure if the procedures described by MS work in that case.

thanks peter and arno!
hope you cud put tis as sticky thread or create these helpful details in the tutorial thread .

Hi, guys!

Yesterday, I've created some program, which gives you ability to switch between two gamepacks (2002 and 2004) automatically!
It's name "MakeMDL switch".
I hope, it will help you with the problems of swithcing between two gamepacks.
You can download it at my site: http://kievscenery.narod.ru/download.html
Instructions are on Russian, but the menu of program is on English. Also, it has an easy interface... :o
Just copy all files from zip-archive, launch the Patch.
After patching, launch the program. When you've saved some settings in the program, you can close it and start your Gmax.

Good luck!

I have four icons on my Desktop to launch GMax:

FS2002
FS2004 Aircraft (MiddleMan+ModelCommander)
FS2004 Scenery
FSX

It's simply a matter of clicking on the one I'm going to use! :D

I hope you are aware that you are redistributing some files that can normally only be found on the FS2002 Pro Disk. Although FS2002 is quite old by now, I doubt that is legal.
