• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Mass Texture Converter

Anyone know of any tool that will resize FSX textures without removing alpha or changing format?

Eg...I need to resize all tree textures from 512 to 256 for an upcoming airport and it is tiresome doing it manually for each file so is here any way I can get a program which will do all the texture resizing by itself for me?

I saw this - http://www.planesimulation.com/articles/fsx_tweak.htm - but I can't find anywhere to download the .BATCH files.

Any ideas?

The nconvert-program is still available at:
http://www.xnview.com/en/download_nc.html

With nconvert -help you get all possible input parameters for nconvert e.g. -resize for changing the size. Take a look at the help file and find out which parameter is used for the definition of the alpha-channel and the desired output-format.

just type xnview. I have converted to DDs and I think the have retained the alphas, not sure what is what you intend, but I see something about alpha channels too, any way the tool is very cool, and free, always can search for Irfaniew if this is not the tool.

Still not getting any further. :(

While XnView works for some textures when they are converted to .DDS other just display as black.

Any ideas?

I have recently (today) converted an airplane to DDs, and look good, anyway I noticed I have to flip the image before adding this featrure in the "transform" window, very weird I could bet that I had not to touch nothing in the earlier conversions. but in someway work.

I will try flipping the image.

I have tried flipping the images horz. and it remains the same, some textures are black others are fine.

Any ideas? Maybe I am doing something wrong?

Would anyone mind coming onto TimeView to show me?

Black textures mean the have not textures, or wrong format, it's so ?, check the folders, I can help too much because I found this tool recently too.and not worked enough with this to say.
Edit: textures must be fliped vertically for dds conversions by the way.
Another thing, once converted I had to load the texures again selecting them inside the folder, to flip them. because it only loaded a jpeg file which was the only not dds file in the folder.

I have came to the conclusion that it is most likely the wrong format.

Will continue looking for a tool which converts .DTX textures.....

Thanks for your help though! :)

Might be they are 24 bit files, FS does not read them.

Well, the workflow would be:

1. Copy tree textures to temporary folder (and back them up)
2. Use Imagetool (FSX SDK) to convert them to 32bit .bmp textures
3. Use nconvert to cut texture size by half
4. Use Imagetool to convert textures back to DXT5 DDS files
5. Copy textures back to scenery folder

Code:
mkdir [path to desired conversion directory]
mkdir [path to desired backup directory]
copy [path to scenery]\*tree*.dds [path to conversion directory]
copy [path to scenery]\*tree*.dds [path to backup directory]
Imagetool -nogui -bmp -32 [path to conversion directory]\*.dds
nconvert [whatever flags nconvert needs for batch processing and shrinking files]
Imagetool -nogui -dds -DXT5 [path to conversion directory]\*.bmp
copy [path to conversion directory]\*.dds [path to scenery]

Copy the above into a text file, adapt it to your folder and filename structure and save the text file as a .bat.
Make sure that nconvert and Imagetool are in the same folder as the batch file.

(This is quick, rough and dirty and has no guarantee of working.)

Texconv perhaps?

Guys, OP wants to do a mass resize using as few steps as possible retaining alphas and possibly MIPs, right?

I am assuming the source files are FSX compatible .dds only, already flipped, no stray bmps or anything out of the ordinary.

So why not try MS's own TexConv. Should be a one-liner that:

texconv -w 256 -h 256 -m 2 -f DXT5 *.dds

"Convert (resize) all dds files in this folder to 256 using two MIP levels." (Might want to adjust the number of MIPs.)

So where does one get Texconv? See attachment - contains the prog, a help file and a custom Resize.bat already.

Thank you to everyone for their help! it seems I have cracked the art of image resizing. lol

I only have 1 problem remaining. Why does all the textures look very 'fuzzy' and 'noisy' unless I am zoomed up very close?

The default amount. I simply reconverted the entire FSX/Scenery/Global/Texture folder. I used XnView for the conversion.

Hope you've made a backup. An all-purpose file replacement would only work if you have verified that the original files are same type, compression mode, MIP mode, and alpha, which I very much doubt is the case.

We can clear this up in a minute if you include (attach) one original and one converted file that gives the issue.
