• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Material templates based on Model?

Hey Arno,

small idea for implementation, which would expand on the awesome material template feature.

Heavily relying on MCX for processing the .X file after export from MAX. Usually this involves tweaking material settings, adding texture maps, etc..etc..When files are big, with more than 15-20 materials the whole process starts taking more than 20 minutes for a single export .

My proposed solution would be to save off a material template for a given model, similarly to what is being currently done with the .MGP file on the ground polygon wizzard. The worklfow would be as follows:

1. Load .X/MDL into MCX
2. Assign desired properties into materials (including additional night/spec/bump maps)
3. Load material template editor and save a 'model material template' file (.mmt if you'd like..lol)
4. Close MCX
5. Re-load the same .X/MDL into MCX and apply (or load) the .mmt from before and get all your material settings without any manual input.

Hope you guys find this interesting, and Arno, hopefully you can tell me it's feasible?!?

Hi,

Do I understand you correctly that this one template should cover all materials in the model at once?

OK, let me think about it. I'm not sure how easy this will work. For example what to do with new materials or removed materials?

New materials could be ignored I suppose? I think the .mgp file is also ignoring those, correct? i.e. they could just remain with whatever value is already stored in the .X file before loading into MCX.
Removed materials..hmm..not sure, would it give an error if a material is stored in the template but not present in the model? Could it be ignored as well?

Hi again Arno, have you perhaps decided if you'd be interested in checking it out? :)

Hi,

It's on the wish list, but I didn't have time to work on it yet (could be a while).
