• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX MCX Library Export

Hi Arno,

I have recently noticed this. I opened a library through MCX, fixed all the materials and then exported as FSX.bgl

I noticed that the resulting library file is much smaller in size than the original, created by InstantScenery Library maker.

The models appear just fine, but you have any clues why?

Hi,

Did you use the option to export all objects to bgl? That should give similar size. Unless some features got lost, like skin and bone animations.

If you use the normal export option only the selected object is exported. That of course will give a smaller size.

Sorry, double post again....dont know whats wrong with me today! lol

Yes whole library is exported in a single FSX.bgl file. Around 350MDLs, no animations.

So you would normally expect this to have the same size no?

Yes, that should give almost the same size. Can be small differences as MCX does some optimization on import. But the difference should not be too big.

Well it is 1400KB originally, and 800KB after MCX conversion.

Seems pretty big change to me, that's why I wondered.

BGL files attached, in case you want to have a quick look at them :)

Hi,

That's surprising indeed. Which tool was used to make the original MDL files? I would be surprised so much optimization can be applied.

Some were done by gmax export, and for some I exported the X file from 3dsmax9 and XtoMDL, nothing really fancy ;)

using SDK SP2 by the way.

Hi,

I would not expect such a big difference with those tools. But I noticed the amount of objects is the same. It might be interesting to compare some objects and see if the amount of triangles or drawcalls differs a lot.
