• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

mdltweak problem

I made a mdl with gmax, the mdl contains few buildings, I want them to be appear only within 300m, so I try the mdltweak to set the distance to RefPoint>033B>0>300;dec... after I go to FS2004, there is nothing I can see, I cannot see the buildings I made whatever I go near the location nor far away, please help me Arno, is there anything I did a mistake ?

The distance is measured to the ref(-erence) point (the offspring of the coordinates in GMAX) and 300m is not very much ... are you sure you came closer than 300 m to your ref point? If you use chase plane view, you have to add the distance from the view spot to the plane.

You also have to remember the trigger. What did you enter there?

I think that mdltweaker may not be the best decision for disappearing buildings. Why don't you create LODs? You could make a second LOD that shows no buildings at all.
But I'm not too familiar with LODs - maybe the tweaking is easier.

I think Georg already answered your question. The distance is measured from the Reference point, so it only works as intended if you have designed your GMax building nicely around the 0,0 point (as is the optimal way to do it).

If that is not the case you would either have to increase the range or move the object to the 0,0 point. Another option is indeed to use LODs, but I think a simple distance check is easier.

thanks for the replies, but it contains several objects, not only one object.
Do you mean I should put the several objects around 0,0 ?

Just try a tweak with ... let's say 1500 m and tell us, if you can see the objects appear and disappear when you move towards them or away.

If you export them as one mdl they are treated as one. That means it's only important how far you are away from the RefPoint - no matter how far away form this some buildings may be.
This can of course lead to surprising results, for example an object vanishing when you get closer (Maybe this is a good possibility to create funny gimmicks...:D).

Hi all, I have tried to set the max distance 3000 to 9999, and set all the objects around 0,0 point, but still cannot see anything come out in FS2004.
in the xml I have set its scale 0.2, I am wondering if the scale which is too small can affect it ? or other reason ?

Hi,

When you set all objects around 0,0 you also have to export each of them as a separate MDL file and place it with an own line of XML code of course (this is the preffered approach).

When you write you set the distance between 3000 and 9999 meters, does this mean that you have set the minimum to 0 at that moment as well? If you have entered 3000 and 9999 in the two boxes, then you object will only be visible between 3000 and 9999 meters (and not when you get closer).

As far as I know the scale in the XML code should not really affect this. But in general it is best to use a scale of 1 in the XML code. With the floating point code it is no problem to give your object the correct size in GMax.

hi, I set it from 0 to 9999, I mean I tried it 0 to 3000 and 0 to 9999, it also doesn't work. But I haven't tried export each object to mdl, it seems that it causes much work to me, because each object also contains several boxes and cylinder,sphere...., if I export each of them takes a long time and very confuse... if I group all of them together, does the mdl thinks it is one object ?

Hi,

I don't mean you have to make a MDL file for each part in your GMax scene. Just for every big building in there.

Can you maybe sent me the tweaked MDL file that you made? Maybe I can see what goes wrong.

Hi,

I tried your file and it does indeed not work correct with MDL Tweaker. I think this is because your file is just too complex (it covers an area of roughly 2x2 km). I don't know why MDL Tweaker does not work, but I don't think I can fix it soon (MDL Tweaker II is coming anyway).
