• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Mesh Resolution

Just what does the mesh resolution slider affect in FSX and what might be a good setting for it? I have been running mine at 10m but have seen suggested 2mm or 1mm. What might I gain or lose either way?
Also, I was wondering why Kosta suggested 1m in his tweaking guide and Nick's guide recommended 10m. Then I was looking at an addon from Birdhouse and they said setting 2m or less to prevent floating objects or other scenery trouble. Of course, I bet trying out different settings on my computer is the best why to see but wondered what others might experience.

Hi,

As the name says the setting controls the resolution of the mesh. So it determines how many meters there is between different points of the terrain elevation. If a scenery has elevation data that is more accurate then the value you select you won't see the full detail as designed. So that's probably why some addons advice low values.

I have been experimenting with different settings around the world and do see some difference I think. Thank you for your response. Still learning!

Hi,

My resolution I have set at 1m as in some of my own sceneries I have to keep the water from climbing up (harbor quays, etc.).
I do not think it influences the fps that much and it suits my purposes where necessary and does not make any difference where the mesh is only 10-30m.
I have also my mesh complexity at 100 and take the 'stepping' for granted. Not doing this would undo the results of the higher resolution.
I am afraid I am not explaining it too well. Hopefully somebody can explain it better.

No, you have explained it very much so I might better understand. Thank you very much!

I believe that setting the mesh resolution at 1m all but made my ocean waves coming ashore disappear. Setting back to 10m they reappeared.
