• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Missing Shadows

Hi Don,

after SAMM2 now basically works with me, I have a question:

I miss the shadow of the static models. While you write in a pinned thread something about a parameter static_cg_height in the aircraft.cfg and a negative bias in the XML, but I do not understand it properly. What should I do to get a shadow?

I create with SAMM2 a BGL, which I then use with ADEX to place the model. Goes well but just without shadows.

There are 5 shadow option on the main panel. Shadows are discussed in the middle of page 5 of the user manual. If you are using the default setting, then there must be a shadow generated by the .mdl file. Otherwise, you've got to "tell" SAMM how to generate the shadow.

If you are using P3D, make sure you have the correct P3D shadow options selected. As well, if you park the model on a ground poly, P3D has difficulty with shadows on ground polys below Layer 16 and above Layer v37. DO you get shadows in FSX or FS9?

Hi Don,

I put my static model ( P3Dv2 default King Air 350) on CYYJ ORBX PNW . There are several static models and all have a shadow ( except my own static model).
As shadow option I had "Default " selected .
As BGL type "P3Dv2" .

If I try shadow type "Custom" (no matter which LOD) I get the message:

Error:
Index what out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of collection.
Parameter name : index

When I try to create an FSX BGL, I get the message:
Internal Compiler Error : # C1003 : Failed to create MSXML object !
(0x8004154 )
Parsing Document: D:\Static Aircraft\Libraries\FSX King Air\FSX King Air xml

Internal Compiler Error : # C2430 : Unrecoverable error parsing XML!
Internal Compiler Error : # C2006 : Parse failed ( 0x80004005 )
Internal Compiler Error : # C2003 : Failed to process file: D \ Static Aircraft \ Libraries \ FSX King Air \ FSX King Air xml

As Sim version I have only P3Dv2.
In summary :
P3Dv2 static model with default Shadow == > OK but NO shadow
P3Dv2 static model with custom shadow == > Error : Index was out .......
FSX static model with default shadow == > no BGL creation possible (Compiler Error)
FSX static model with custom shadow == > no BGL creation possible (Compiler Error)

Index what out of range.
Everything you did after this is suspect. It shouldn't have happened - and in future releases won't.

Had SAMM not thrown an exception, it would have asked you for a model file for the shadow, which I doubt you have created. So "Custom" isn't useful to you anyway. Given the shadow issues in P3Dv2, it's not clear where the problem lies (without me experimenting - which I won't have time to do for a day or so.) That's why I asked you if the model displayed a shadow in FSX. If it doesn't, then I probably have some work to do. If it does, then you should seek an answer from Lockheed Martin.
